Tampa Bay Downs Picks – Saturday, January 16, 2021

| January 15, 2021 1:37 pm PDT

Tampa Bay Downs headlines three ungraded stakes races among its schedule of eleven regular maiden, allowance, and claiming matches.

Spectators are permitted at Tampa Bay Downs, and locals attending the races Saturday can expect a cool day under partly cloudy skies, with temps in the mid-60s and winds around 17 mph.

I review Saturday’s three stakes races at Tampa Bay Downs here, but you can find their full 11-race card at one of our best online racebooks.

Now, read on for my Tampa Bay Downs picks and betting tips for Saturday, January 16, 2021.

Picks for Race 6 at Tampa Bay Downs — Gasparilla Stakes

This is the Gasparilla Stakes, an ungraded stakes race for three-year-old fillies running a distance of seven furlongs for a purse of $125,000.

My money is on the second-favored (5/2) entry in this race — Big Rings, ridden by Samy Camacho. This filly moneyed both of her career starts and wone one of them. She most recently placed second at the FTBOA Florida Sire My Dear Girl Stakes (Black Type) at Gulfstream Park in September.

At 12/1 Marketability, with Keiber J. Coa in the irons, looks like a good value show ticket. This filly moneyed both her career starts, winning one.

  •  Win: Big Rings 5/2
  •  Show: Marketability 12/1

Pick for Race 7 at Tampa Bay Downs — Pasco Stakes

This is the Pasco Stakes, an ungraded stakes race for three-year-olds running a distance of seven furlongs for a purse of $125,000.

I’m betting on one of the fourth-favored entries (there are two at 6/1) in this race — Thealligatorhunter, with Alonso Quinonez aboard. This colt finished in the money three of his four career starts, winning two.

I see no longer-odds entries in this race that could have a realistic shot at a money finish against this field.

  •  Win: Thealligatorhunter 6/1

Pick for Race 9 at Tampa Bay Downs — Wayward Lass Stakes

This is the Wayward Lass Stakes, an ungraded stakes race for fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of 1-1/16 miles for a purse of $50,000.

I’m backing the 2/1 favorite in this race — Lucky Stride, with Antonio Gallardo in the irons. This five-year-old mare finished in the money 13 of her 15 career starts, winning eight of them.

There are a handful of long-odds entries in this race, but none that look capable of finishing in the money against this field.

  •  Win: Lucky Stride 2/1

More Racing Picks for Saturday

Tampa Bay Downs was the least generous track for both underdogs and long-odds moneymakers, but never you mind — there are plenty of those at the other two tracks I reviewed for Saturday:
