Tampa Bay Downs Picks for Friday, February 5, 2021
Tampa Bay Downs schedules nine maiden and claiming races for Friday, and while I find myself agreeing with the morning line more often than not, I still manage to find a sleeper and a solid long-odds show bet to keep our bankrolls fat and sassy.
Read on for my Tampa Bay Downs picks and betting tips for Friday, February 5, 2021.
Picks for Race 1 at Tampa Bay Downs
This is a claiming race for three-year-old fillies running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $21,200.
This race could be a real nail-biter, but I’m going to stick with the 2/1 morning line favorite — Hightime Valentine, with Samy Camacho in the irons. This filly moneyed both of her career starts, breaking her maiden in December, then nailing a second-place in a claiming race in early January — both at Tampa Bay.
The longest odds in this match are 8/1 — too short for a value show bet, in other words. But upon closer inspection, I believe we have a sleeper to consider: Peaceful Way, ridden in this race by Ademar Santos. Like the favorite, this filly moneyed both of her career starts with a second-place finish followed by a win — both of which were just last month.
- Win: Hightime Valentine 2/1
- Sleeper: Peaceful Way 8/1
Pick for Race 2 at Tampa Bay Downs
This is a claiming race for three-year-olds running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $20,950.
I’m going with the third-favored (4/1) entry here — Highly Noted, with Daniel Centeno aboard. This gelding moneyed four of his nine career starts, winning one — which gives him a statistical advantage in this field.
Neither of the longer-odds entries in this run give any indication they will do anything beyond chasing the other horses across the finish line.
- Win: Highly Noted 4/1
Picks for Race 9 at Tampa Bay Downs
This is a maiden special weight race for fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $23,500.
The morning line has the also-eligible/MTO entry Dovima, ridden by Antonio Gallardo at 3/1. This four-year-old filly moneyed four of her five career starts. If scratches or a switch to the main track brings Dovima to the starting gate, bet her to win.
Otherwise, your win ticket should be on the morning line’s 5/2 turf favorite, Dinn Righ, with Daniel Centeno aboard. This four-year-old filly finished in the money three of her four career starts.
There are plenty of long-odds entries in this race, but I don’t think any of them are likely to see a happy ending at the finish line.
- Win: Dovima 3/1 (if starts)
- Win: Dinn Righ 5/2 (otherwise)
