Tampa Bay Downs Picks – Wednesday, February 3, 2021

| February 2, 2021 2:47 pm PDT

Tampa Bay Downs’ Wednesday thoroughbred racing schedule is all about claiming matches of one sort or another. I dive deep into the statistics pool and uncover some interesting underdogs with winning potential.

But enough teasing — let’s move on to my Tampa Bay Downs picks and tips for Wednesday, February 3, 2021.

Pick for Race 5 at Tampa Bay Downs

This is a claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and up running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $17,850.

I like the second-favored (7/2 morning line) entry for this race — Lake Parima, ridden by Jose A. Batista. This four-year-old filly moneyed eight of her 11 career starts, winning two. Yes, I know the morning line favorite has a more experienced jockey aboard, but I don’t think that will be enough to take the win away from Lake Parima and Batista.

The longest odds in this race are 12/1, and I don’t see a happy ending at the finish line for that entry.

  •  Win: Lake Parima 7/2

Pick for Race 7 at Tampa Bay Downs

This is a claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $19,100.

I like the third-favored (5/1) entry here — Morgan’s Z Va, with Huber Villa-Gomez in the irons. This six-year-old mare finished in the money 19 of her 38 career starts, winning nine.

I know, I know — I backed this mare a couple of weeks ago, and she embarrassed us both with a ninth-place finish, but I tout based on the overall record, not on the occasional blip. And even with that blip, her record remains better than the morning line favorite’s.

There are no longer-odds entries in this race that look as though they might do much more than chase the other horses across the finish line, so save your long money.

  •  Win: Morgan’s Z Va 5/1

Pick for Race 8 at Tampa Bay Downs

This is an allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $23,750.

I’m backing the 5/2 morning line favorite here — Starship Reina, with Roberto Alvarado, Jr. aboard. This eight-year-old mare has finished in the money 35 of her 55 career starts, winning 12 of them.

None of the longer-odds entries in this race appear to be capable of crossing the finish line in time for payday, so I don’t have a value show ticket recommendation unless you count “don’t do it.”

  •  Win: Starship Reina 5/2

Tampa Bay Downs was stingy with the profit opportunities, but we can always turn to the other two tracks I reviewed for Wednesday:
