Tampa Bay Downs Picks – Wednesday, February 24, 2021
Tampa Bay Downs’ nine-race card for Wednesday features seven maiden, allowance, and claiming runs, as well as two Listed stakes races postponed from last week.
The Turf Dash Stakes and the Lightning City Stakes were both moved from last Saturday to Sunday and then rescheduled again for Wednesday, courtesy of the soggy condition of the turf course.
Read on for my Tampa Bay Downs picks and tips for the richest three races on Wednesday, February 24, 2021.
Pick for Race 2 at Tampa Bay Downs
This is an allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds running a distance of one mile and 40 yards for a purse of $31,250.
It’s hard to argue with the morning line about this race, so I won’t: My win ticket is for the 2/1 favorite — Soup and Sandwich, ridden by Antonio A. Gallardo. This colt won his single career start and also nailed top speed figures in comparison to the rest of this six-horse field.
As far as value show bets are concerned, the longest odds in this race are 8/1, and that just doesn’t get us there. Save your long money for later.
- Win: Soup and Sandwich 2/1
Picks for Race 7 at Tampa Bay Downs – Turf Dash Stakes
This is the Turf Dash Stakes, a Listed stakes race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of five furlongs on turf for a purse of $100,000.
My money is on the 8/5 morning line favorite in this race — Imprimis, with Antonio A. Gallardo in the irons. This seven-year-old gelding moneyed 11 of his 17 career starts, winning nine of them. His most recent win was the Janus Stakes (Listed) at Gulfstream Park in January, and he also won the Turf Sprint Stakes (Grade III) at Kentucky Downs last September.
At 20/1, I see a lot to like about Arcadia Calls, with Roberto Alvarado, Jr. aboard, for a value show wager. This five-year-old gelding moneyed ten of his 18 career starts, winning five.
- Win: Imprimis 8/5
- Show: Arcadia Calls 20/1
Picks for Race 9 at Tampa Bay Downs – Lightning City Stakes
This is the Lightning City Stakes, a Listed stakes race for fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of five furlongs on turf for a purse of $100,000.
The choice is easy in this race — the 3/1 morning line favorite, The Goddess Lyssa, ridden by Daniel Centeno. This four-year-old filly moneyed six of her seven career starts, winning five of them. Her latest win was the Minaret Stakes (Black Type) at Tampa Bay earlier this month.
And I think the 15/1 Awesum Roar (no jockey named as of this writing) is a solid choice for a value show ticket. This seven-year-old mare moneyed 22 of her 30 career starts, winning ten. You could consider an across-the-board wager here, but I’m only recommending the show bet.
- Win: The Goddess Lyssa 3/1
- Show: Awesum Roar 15/1
