Sydney Thunder vs. Melbourne Stars – Big Bash League, December 29, 2020
A run of three straight wins has seen the Thunder move one point ahead of the Stars, while Team Green come into Tuesday’s clash on an uncharacteristic two-game winless streak.
The two sides met on the opening day of the BBL 10 campaign, with the Stars winning by 22 runs on that occasion. But who will come out on top this time around?
I assess the bookies’ odds before giving my Sydney Thunder vs. Melbourne Stars prediction and betting pick.
Sydney Thunder vs. Melbourne Stars Odds
Despite failing to win either of their last two games, 10bet views the Stars (1.73) as the favorites to claim the points on Tuesday.
The Thunder (2.10) may have lost to Team Green already this season, but let’s not forget that the Sydney outfit has since secured three successive victories.
Sydney Thunder vs. Melbourne Stars Preview
After losing to the Stars, the Thunder claimed two narrow victories. Shane Bond’s men beat the Heat by four wickets with seven balls left before beating Perth by seven wickets with just three balls remaining.
However, it’s safe to say that there was nothing narrow about the Thunder’s victory over the Renegades on Boxing Day.
The Sydneysiders posted a total on 209/8, with Oliver Davies (48), Alex Hales (35), Usman Khawaja (34), and Callum Ferguson (31) all starring with the bat. As well as top scoring, 20-year-old Davies also became the youngest player in BBL history to hit five consecutive sixes.
The Thunder then went on to tear through the Gades batting line-up. Tanveer Sangha claimed remarkable figures of 4/14 from just 3.2 overs, while Chris Green (2/7) and Adam Milne (2/21) helped to reduce Michael Klinger’s side to just 80 runs.
With a 129-run win behind them, the Thunder will be confident of gaining their revenge on the Stars.

The Stars kicked off their BBL 10 campaign with back-to-back wins over Brisbane and the Thunder, but they head into their fifth match of the season on a two-game winless run.
David Hussey’s men were chasing 158/6 before their match against the Scorchers was rained off. Ten days later, they lost a dramatic Boxing Day thriller against the Sixers.
Gleen Maxwell smashed 71* off 47 balls last time out, while Nicholas Pooran hit eight sixes on his way to scoring 65 off just 26. Ben Dunk (24) also chipped in, yet his efforts weren’t enough to prevent the defeat.
Liam Hatcher starred with the ball again, taking 3/33. Nathan Coulter-Nile (2/14) and Adam Zampa (2/47) also give their all, but the Sixers managed to win with just one ball to spare.
Can the Stars bounce back from such an agonizing loss?
Sydney Thunder vs. Melbourne Stars Prediction and Pick
Sydney Thunder to Win2.10
I’m going against the bookmakers and backing the Thunder to win this one. The Stars may boast the big-name players, but it feels like the momentum is with the Sydney team at the moment.
Having won each of their previous three matches, the Thunder will be brimming with confidence heading into this game. On the flip side, the Stars will probably feel deflated following their narrow loss to the Sixers on Boxing Day.
