Sydney FC vs. Adelaide United – A-League, June 19, 2021
Adelaide United overcame Brisbane Roar in the Elimination Finals to set up a mouth-watering semi-final clash with Sydney FC on Saturday, June 19.
The South Australians travel to Netstrata Jubilee Stadium this weekend, hoping to upset the A-League odds and defeat the reigning champions on home soil.
The Sky Blues finished the regular season in impressive form, winning all of their final five matches. Naturally, they head into Saturday’s showdown as the bookmakers’ clear favorites.
Before we get to my Sydney FC vs. Adelaide United prediction and betting pick, let’s take a look at the odds and analyze both teams.
Sydney FC vs. Adelaide United Odds
Second-place Sydney FC (1.62) ended up finishing eight points clear of fifth-place Adelaide (4.60) on the A-League ladder. With that in mind, it is hardly surprising that Steve Corica’s side is the clear favorite here.
Let’s not forget that Sydney crushed the Reds 4-1 less than three weeks ago, too. The Sky Blues have already netted six goals against Adelaide this year and will fancy their chances of enhancing that record this weekend.
Previewing the Match
When it comes to betting on Sydney FC vs. Adelaide United, it is extremely difficult to forget about what happened the last time the two sides met.
Adam Le Fondre bagged a brace, while Bobo and Patrick Wood also got on the scoresheet. Le Fondre has now bagged three goals and one assist in five games since returning to the club, while Bobo has netted 11 goals in his last 18 matches – including a double against Adelaide.
The Sky Blues finished the regular season with a record of W13-D8-L5, meaning they lost fewer number of games. On top of that, they conceded just 23 goals in the process – giving them the best defensive record in the A-League.
Le Fondre and Bobo have forged a lethal attacking partnership in recent weeks, but we can’t ignore the contributions from defenders like Alex Wilkinson and Joel King.
Despite seeing just 37% possession in Queensland, Adelaide managed to weather the storm and get the better of Brisbane in the Elimination Finals.
The Reds were the bookies’ underdogs last weekend. However, a quick-fire first-half brace from Tomi Juric gave them a 2-0 lead inside 19 minutes, and the Roar failed to recover.
With star man Craig Goodwin set to miss Saturday’s clash through injury, Juric will need to be at his very best against Sydney FC. Goodwin chalked up eight goals and five assists during the regular season, but he is unlikely to be fit this weekend.
Carl Veart’s men haven’t struggled to score goals this year. In fact, just four A-League sides netted more regular-season goals than Adelaide. But having conceded 41 goals, only four teams have a poorer defensive record.
The South Australians ended the campaign with a record of W11-D6-L9. It goes without saying the Sydney FC’s tally is far superior.
Betting Pick for Sydney FC vs. Adelaide
Sydney FC to Win1.62
Don’t get me wrong – I would love to make a case for Adelaide here. The odds for both the draw and away win are hugely attractive, but I have to side with the betting sites on this occasion.
Ultimately, the defending champs have been on a totally different level to the Reds throughout the season. With their strikers scoring goals for fun and their backline looking almost unbeatable, the Sky Blues should advance to the final on Saturday.
