USFL Championship Pick and Prediction for Stallions vs. Stars (2022)

We have reached the final week of Spring football, as the USFL season has reached the Championship game. The Birmingham Stallions will be taking on the Philadelphia Stars and the winner will be crowned champion of the USFL in its inaugural season.
It’s been a very memorable season with lots of great games along the way. Both of these teams deserve to be here after making it to and through the playoffs. Birmingham took care of New Orleans in the South playoff game, while the Stars beat the Generals for the North playoff game.
Only one team will be the champion though, so we have to make our Stallions vs. Stars pick accordingly. Let’s take a look at the Stallions vs. Stars odds for the Championship game.

As you can see from the top USFL betting sites, the Stallions vs. Stars odds have the Stallions favored to win the 2022 USFL Championship. This isn’t a surprise considering how impressive they have been this season.
They have been at the top of the standings for the entire year, finishing at an impressive 9-1. Birmingham won their first 8 games of the year and looked very impressive in their win over New Orleans last week.

On the other hand, the Stars just took down another team that finished 9-1 in the regular season in the New Jersey Generals. They finished 6-4 on the year, but they have been hot at the perfect time.
The over/under for this game is also set at a moderate 46 points, while the moneylines come out to be around (-200) for Birmingham and (+165) for Philadelphia. If you aren’t intrigued by the tricky 4.5-point spread, maybe consider the total or a team’s moneyline.
Let’s get into our Stallions vs. Stars pick by breaking down the matchup.
Stallions vs. Stars Matchup Preview
Making it to the Championship game is always a big deal, no matter what sport you are in. It means that you are at least one of the two best teams in the league and survived the tough playoffs.
The journey isn’t over yet though, as winning the Championship is going to be as hard as making it to the big game. Before getting into our Stallions vs. Stars betting picks for the Championship, we have to break down each team individually to see who has the advantage.
Birmingham Stallions Matchup Preview
One thing is for sure, the Stallions should definitely have the upper hand in this game. They’ve been the league’s best team all year and this is their chance to put a stamp on it. Birmingham’s talent is through the roof and they’ve been able to easily beat their opponents seemingly all year.
Their total point differential this season ended up being +65, which is the best mark in the league. They were able to score 234 points in the regular season (2nd best) and held their opponents to just 169 points (2nd best).
As you probably have heard before, defense wins championships. Birmingham’s defense was one of the top units in the league in 2022, while the Stars were one of the worst. That should give the Stallions a huge advantage in the championship game.
The Stallions also steamrolled the Stars in their matchup in Week 5. They outscored the Stars 30-17, which would easily cover the spread set for the Championship.
With that being said, you can’t just copy and paste the results between the two teams. Philadelphia can still win this game, so the Stallions are going to have to play up to their potential.
Defensively the Stallions have a major advantage, but they are also very comparable offensively. Yes, the Stars scored more points than Birmingham this year, but the Stallions’ offense can handle their own.
There’s a very strong case for backing the favorites for your Stallions vs. Stars pick for the Championship game.
Philadelphia Stars Matchup Preview
Although the Stallions have the upper hand, who doesn’t love a great underdog story? The USFL is a league that is built on players that aren’t perfect. Birmingham has been the best team in the league, but they can still make crucial mistakes.
J’Mar Smith is a solid quarterback for Birmingham, but he can be unreliable at times. He’s benefited greatly from his defense, which makes him seem better than he is. Here’s what his stats are looking like over the last 3 weeks.
- Playoffs (vs. NO): 17 for 27, 190 yards, 1 touchdown
- Week 10: (vs. TB): 3 for 8, 72 yards, 1 interception
- Week 9 (vs. HOU): 28 for 41, 260 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception
Smith’s 54.8% completion percentage could be tough to rely on in a pass-first offense. The Stallions won without him for the most part in Week 10 and lost their first game of the season against the lowly Gamblers with him in Week 9.
That leaves the door open for the Stars, whose offense has been flying high this entire season. If Smith stumbles, the Stars can leave the Stallions in the dust.
For example, Philadelphia smoked the Panthers by scoring 46 points in Week 8.
The Stars just beat the previously 9-1 Generals to make it here, so why wouldn’t they be able to beat another 9-1 team? It’s going to be tough, but if this becomes an offensive shootout, the Stars could have a strong chance of winning.
USFL Pick for the Stallions vs. Stars Championship
At the end of the day, my Stallions vs. Stars pick is going to be the Stallions’ moneyline. They have a major defensive advantage in this one, which will be the main reason why they can win. The biggest reason why the Stallions have been the best USFL team in 2022 is because of their ability to play well on offense and defense.
The Stars won the first half against the Stallions in Week 5 (17-14), but the Stallions completely shut them out in the second half. Birmingham can use those same adjustments they made at halftime at the beginning of the game now, so the Stars are going to be in for a long day.
Feel free to take the Stallions’ spread for slightly better odds, but a 4.5-point spread can be tricky. The moneyline is safer, so you have some good options here.
All in all, it’s been a great season for the USFL and we can’t wait until next year. The Birmingham Stallions have every reason to be the champion, so that’s what we are going with for our Stallions vs. Stars prediction for the Championship game.
