One of the best games for Sunday’s KBO slate is going to be the SSG Landers taking on the Kia Tigers. The Landers have been in first place for basically the entire 2022 season, while Kia has been one of the hottest teams in the league recently.

Landers vs. Tigers Matchup Preview

Now let’s get into the matchup preview for what should be one of the best games on Sunday’s slate. Each team has a right to win this game and have split the series so far. So let’s take a look at some recent trends that could possibly be the deciding factor in who wins this game.

SSG Landers Matchup Preview

There’s no doubt that the best team in the 2022 KBO season has been the SSG Landers. They’ve come flying out of the gate and haven’t looked back. Their 33-14-2 record has them sitting pretty in first place and 5.0 games ahead of the second place team (Kiwoom Heroes).

The standings are very close across the board right now, with just 6 games being the difference between 2nd place and 7th place. SSG’s 5 game lead on second place is very impressive when you take that into consideration.

They were incredible in the opening month of the season, winning almost 80% of their games (19-5-1, 79.2% winning percentage). That stretch gave them a comfortable lead on the rest of the KBO.

Since then, they haven’t had that same fire but have remained in first place. SSG came back down to Earth with a 59.1% winning percentage (13-9-1) in the month of May. Their offense has been a tad better in May, but their pitching took a major step back.

April’s team ERA was 2.72 (league best), while May’s team ERA is 4.35 (4th best). With that being said, they are an impressive 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, scoring 5.4 runs per game (4th best), while allowing 4.0 runs per game (second best).

If they are going to win on Sunday, the pitching staff is going to have to have a big game.

Kia Tigers Matchup Preview

The reason why the Landers’ pitchers need to do well on Sunday is because the best offense in the KBO is none other than the Kia Tigers. They have been incredible in 2022, scoring a league-best 5.15 runs per game. That’s almost half a run (.44) more than the second best team in 2022 (LG Twins, 4.71 runs per game).

Recently they’ve kicked it up a notch as well. In the month of May, they are scoring a league-best 6.0 runs per game, while scoring even more in the last 10 games (7.0). There’s no doubt that they know how to put some runs on the board.

Here are the 3 players that are in the top 10 in RBI this season;

  • Hwang Dae-in (37)
  • Socrates Brito (31)
  • Na Sung-bum (29)

So you might be wondering, if their offense is good then why aren’t they placed higher than 4th right now? Well their run prevention has been nowhere near their run production.

Overall, they rank 8th in team ERA this season (4.35). That’s only better than the Hanwha Eagles and NC Dinos, who are in second-to-last and last place right now. Allowing runs is certainly a problem for them and could be the thing that prevents them from making a deep playoff run.

Top KBO Betting Pick for Landers vs. Tigers on 5/29/2022

  • Over 9

At the end of the day, both teams pretty much have an equal chance of winning this game. SSG is the better pitching team, while Kia is the better hitting team. It’s going to be a very fun battle to watch and it should be high scoring too.

That’s why I have decided to run with the over for my KBO betting pick. I do think that Kia’s hot stretch should give them the edge, but the over should have a higher chance of hitting. Betting against the league’s best team is also something you shouldn’t do very often.

Oh Won-seok takes the mound for the Landers, who has a 3.99 ERA. He will be opposed by Kia’s Han Seung-hyuk, who has a 3.83 ERA this year. Won-seok has looked sharp in his last 2 starts, but he’s not a big strikeout guy.

In 9 starts in 2022, he’s only gotten more than 5 strikeouts twice. He hasn’t faced Kia yet this season, but not being able to get strikeouts means that you’ll have to rely on Kia making weak contact. Given that they’ve been on fire recently, that doesn’t seem like a thing to rely on.

Seung-hyuk had a good start to 2022, but he’s slowed down a bit recently. He’s allowed 11 earned runs in his last 12.2 innings pitched.

SSG’s bullpen has been the best in the KBO in their last 10 games, but Kia ranks 7th. Their first two games of the series also totaled 9 and 12 total runs, which would push or hit the over for this game as well.
