Sporting Kansas City vs. Seattle Sounders – MLS, September 26, 2021

| September 24, 2021 1:31 pm PDT

The top two in the Western Conference go head-to-head on Sunday, September 26, as first-place Sporting KC welcomes Seattle to Children’s Mercy Park.

SKC currently sits one point clear at the summit, although the Sounders have played a game less. Both sides have registered 13 wins and five losses – and they also boast almost identical goal differences.

At the end of July, the Wizards beat Seattle 3-1 at Lumen Field. Will we see a repeat of that result this time around? Or can the Sounders bounce back from Wednesday’s Leagues Cup final loss to Mexican side Club Leon?

I answer those questions – and a whole load more – and this Sporting Kansas City vs. Seattle Sounders betting preview, complete with MLS odds, team analysis, my prediction, and a free betting pick.

SKC Will Be Difficult to Stop on Sunday

Sporting KC heads into Sunday’s clash on the back of a dominant 4-0 thrashing of Minnesota United. If you’ve been following the team this season, you won’t be surprised to learn that Johnny Russell and Daniel Salloi were among the scorers.

Salloi has now bagged 13 goals and six assists in 23 MLS outings this year, underlining his MVP ambitions. Meanwhile, Russell has racked up six goals and six assists in the captain’s armband.

Although the Wizards have suffered five MLS defeats in 2021, three of those defeats came in the opening ten games. Since then, they have only lost two of their previous 15 league matches – picking up eight wins and five draws along the way.

Thanks largely to the exploits of Salloi, Peter Vermes’ men are also the highest scorers in the West. They have netted 43 goals in 25 games (1.72 goals per game), while the Sounders have only scored 36.

Granted, Seattle has a better defensive record than SKC. But let’s face it – the Wizards have got what it takes to outscore any team in Major League Soccer.

Can Seattle Gain Revenge Over the Wizards?

Unfortunately, the Sounders’ Leagues Cup dream ended in heartbreak on Wednesday, as they suffered an agonizing 3-2 loss to Club Leon in the final.

Seattle crushed Tigres 3-0 in the quarter-finals before edging past Santos Laguna in the semis. Yet, despite goals from Cristian Roldan and Nicolas Benezet, Brian Schmetzer’s men were ultimately outclassed by Liga MX’s 2020 Guardianes champions.

The two-time MLS Cup champs must now pick themselves up and focus solely on their domestic commitments.

Wednesday’s defeat to Leon means the Sounders have now lost three of their last five outings in all competitions – but they have also won six of their previous nine. A team of the Sounders’ quality shouldn’t let a slight downturn affect them too much.

When you consider the wider picture, Seattle is enjoying another hugely impressive campaign. With Raul Ruidiaz (16 goals) and Cristian Roldan (3 goals, 5 assists) leading the way, Schmetzer’s side is still among the best in the league.

SKC vs. Seattle – Odds, Prediction, and Pick

Sporting Kansas City to Win1.85
The Draw3.75
Seattle Sounders to Win3.75
Both Teams to Score1.65
Over 2.5 Goals1.80
Under 2.5 Goals2.00

With the home-field advantage on their side, Sporting KC (1.85) is the bookies’ favorite to claim all three points on Sunday. As you can see, the prices for the draw (3.75) and the Seattle win (3.75) are exactly the same.

The best MLS betting sites offer tons of goal-based markets for this game, so I decided to include a few here.

Although Vermes’ men are the highest scorers in the West, the Sounders boast the best defensive record in the entire league. Remarkably, they have only conceded 20 goals in 24 MLS games this season (0.83 goals per game).

When it comes to betting on Sporting KC vs. Seattle, it is also worth remembering that 15 of the Sounders’ 24 MLS clashes this year have dished up less than three goals (62.5%).

  • Under 2.5 Goals

Having taken everything into account, I recommend steering clear of the moneylines for this matchup. Instead, I believe the under 2.5 goals market is the best value bet.

We all know that SCK beat Seattle 3-1 back in July, but the Sounders’ resilience means that scoreline isn’t likely to be repeated this time around.

Plus, with so much at stake at the top end of the Western Conference, both sides will be desperate to avoid defeat on Sunday. With that in mind, I expect the teams to produce a cagey, low-scoring encounter.
