Sporting Kansas City vs. Colorado Rapids – MLS, June 23, 2021

| June 23, 2021 7:36 am PDT

The midweek Major League Soccer schedule dishes up a tasty encounter between two of the Western Conference’s in-form teams.

Second-place Sporting Kansas City welcomes third-place Colorado to Children’s Mercy Park on Wednesday, June 23, with just one point separating the two sides.

Both clubs have picked up five wins this season, although Colorado has two games in hand over SKC. The Rapids will view this match as an opportunity to record their sixth win in seven matches and leapfrog the Wizards.

Sporting KC vs. Colorado Rapids Odds

Sporting Kansas City to Win1.76
The Draw4.05
Colorado Rapids to Win3.95

I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t surprised by the bookmakers’ prices for this matchup. Yes, SKC has the home-field advantage. But the Rapids are enjoying an excellent run at the moment.

Given that Colorado has won five of their previous six games, there is some serious value in the odds for both the draw bet and away win here.

Let’s take a closer look at the teams before settling on a prediction for Sporting KC vs. Colorado.

Previewing the Match

For only the second time this season, Sporting Kansas City heads into a match on a two-game winless run.

Peter Vermes’ men secured four wins in five games last month, seeing off Austin, Vancouver, San Jose, and Houston in the process. But following a draw with Los Verdes, SKC suffered a 2-1 loss to Portland last weekend.

Boasting a record of 5-2-3, the Wizards should be pleased with their efforts this year. However, they have played more games than any other team and also have the joint-worst defensive record in the West.

On the flip side, Vermes’ men are the top scorers in the entire league. With 17 goals to their name this season, they will be confident of finding the back of the net when the Rapids come to town.

  • Sporting KC’s Player to Watch – Daniel Salloi

Salloi has played a key role in Sporting KC’s high-scoring start to 2021. The Hungarian winger has bagged four goals and three assists this term and could cause Colorado plenty of problems.

The Rapids made a low start to the campaign, taking just a single point from their opening two matches. But since then, they have claimed 15 points from a possible 18.

Three straight wins over Vancouver, Minnesota, and Houston set them on their way before a narrow defeat to Los Angeles FC halted the party. But following the loss to LAFC, Colorado has claimed two emphatic victories.

Robin Fraser’s men crushed Dallas 3-0 before the recent lay-off, with Michael Barrios scoring for the second game running. Last time out, Colorado sealed another clean-sheet win – downing Cincinnati 2-0.

Behind Seattle, the Rapids boast the second-best defensive record in the West. They are also the third-highest scorers in the conference, so they are working well in every department at the moment.

  • Colorado’s Player to Watch – Michael Barrios

Barrios has been a revelation since swapping Dallas for Colorado during the offseason. The Colombian has racked up two goals and three assists in his last four appearances, underlining his importance.

Score Prediction for SKC vs. Colorado

The Rapids could have taken a turn for the worse after losing to LAFC last month. Instead, they bounced back and recorded two high-scoring victories.

Having netted five goals across their last two games, Colorado looks set to exploit SKC’s leaky backline. With that in mind, I’m going with a final score of 1-3 for my Sporting KC vs. Colorado Rapids prediction.

My Sporting KC vs. Rapids Betting Pick

  • Colorado Rapids to Win

The giant price for the away win is too good to miss here. After all, the Rapids have won five of their last six matches and will fancy their chances of securing another three-point haul against SKC.

Despite seeing 66% of the ball and notching 19 shots against Portland on Saturday, the Wizards only recorded three attempts on target and lost 2-1. I can see the hosts scoring on Wednesday, but I’m confident that Colorado will get the win.
