Southampton vs. West Bromwich Albion Betting Preview – EPL, October 4, 2020
In a goal-filled start to the season, West Brom nearly recorded the shock of the season so far last weekend as it came so close to beating Chelsea. This weekend it takes on a Southampton side that is growing in confidence each week.
It will be interesting to see whether winning just a point from that game against Frank Lampard’s wealthy squad after being 3-0 up will act as a spur to try harder for West Brom – or if it is simply a sign of how the season will go.
Southampton vs. West Brom Odds
The three goals scored in the first half-hour of the game against Chelsea suggest that there is some fight in the West Brom team. But the final outcome may be more indicative of its ability to win in the Premier League. I think BetOnline has been favorable to the visiting team with these odds – and the home win bet looks good value even though Southampton is odds on to come out on top.
Much was hoped of this Southampton team after the way it came back from what seemed like certain relegation early on last season. Sticking with Ralph Hasenhuttl looked like a good decision and his team was playing some of the best soccer in the league at the end of the last campaign.
That’s why the start of this season has been so disappointing. Back-to-back defeats to Palace and Spurs didn’t sit with the way everyone thought the Saints would come out. But the win over Burnley was well deserved – and if the manager can get the rest of the team apart from Danny Ings to pitch in with some goals, it could end up being a good year after all on the south coast.
After 34 minutes of the game with Chelsea last weekend, West Brom looked as if it had turned a corner of its own. But even a three-goal lead wasn’t enough for the Baggies as they eventually succumbed to the pressure and conceded an equalizer deep into stoppage time. How crucial might those two lost points be at the end of the season?
There are some very good players in Slaven Bilic’s squad – especially Grady Diangana and Matheus Pereira. But those two will have a lot of their plate trying to keep the club up this season. Defensive frailties will no doubt be on show again and Southampton might fancy its chances this weekend.
My Betting Pick
Southampton to Win-132
Southampton will probably have a few wobbles throughout the season that will affect its chances of getting anywhere near the European places. But the beginnings of a good team are starting to show through. Hasenhutl needs to keep hold of Ings to progress further – but the striker should be able to add to his goal tally on Sunday against West Brom.
