Southampton vs. Sheffield United – EPL, December 13, 2020

Southampton looks to consolidate its current European spot on Sunday as it welcomes a struggling Sheffield United to the St Mary’s Stadium.

The Blades are still without a win and are falling further and further behind the rest of the league. Something needs to change quickly for Chris Wilder and his team.

Southampton vs. Sheffield United Odds

Southampton to Win-133
The Draw+260
Sheffield United to Win+350

The laws of probability suggest that Sheffield United will win a game sooner or later this season. But BetOnline doesn’t think it will be this weekend – and I think I agree with the bookmaker on this occasion. The way Sheffield United’s luck has gone recently, I would want much longer odds to be tempted with the away win here.

Southampton vs. Sheffield United Match Preview

Towards the end of last season, this fixture would have between two clubs with an outside chance of qualifying for Europe. But this year, it is only Southampton that is dreaming of the continental competition. The Saints beat Brighton to go fifth on Monday and were happy to have Danny Ings back from injury, as he scored the winner ten minutes from time.

It was the first time that Southampton had won in three games, and that result will have given the club a renewed hope in keeping up with the top teams this season. With players like James Ward-Prowse able to score free kicks from just about anywhere around the penalty area, the Saints have a number of options when it comes to match winners.

There is still definitely a fighting spirit in the Sheffield United team – as was evident in its most recent game against Leicester. But there are far too many mistakes being made, and that can mean the difference between a win and a loss in the EPL. The other thing that Sheffield United has to do is take its chances when it gets them.

Ollie McBurnie was guiltier than anyone of not taking his against Leicester – even if he did end up scoring his team’s only goal. It is to the club’s credit that there has been little mention in the media of Chris Wilder losing his job. But if the results continue as they have been, it can only be a matter of time before his future is decided for him.

Southampton vs. Sheffield United Prediction and Pick

  • Southampton to Win

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s project is certainly beginning to bear fruit now, as Southampton continue to improve. From being everyone’s favorite to go down at one point last season to challenging for Europe once again, the Saints look like one of the better teams in the division now. This should be a fairly straightforward three points at the weekend.
