Six Nations Predictions and Best Bets – Saturday, October 31, 2020

The ‘virus that shall not be mentioned by name’ put many sports and tournaments on ice in early 2020, and rugby was no different. Thus, we find ourselves with the final round of this year’s Six Nations played on Halloween.

Three teams can win the title on a super Saturday for rugby fans. England, France, and Ireland are all in the reckoning for the Six Nations crown, but just one team will hoist the trophy when all is said and done.

I’ll touch upon the best bets for the tournament’s final weekend in 2020 a bit later. But first, here are the fixtures for Round 5 of the 2020 Six Nations 

We have three excellent fixtures in store this Saturday. Ireland travels to France in search of a bonus-point win, England aims to do the Italian job in Rome, while Celtic-cousins Wales and Scotland lock horns in Llanelli.

This one almost happened in March but was called off at the last minute. 

Scotland will travel down to Parc Y Scarlets looking to end a losing run against the Welsh that goes all the way back to 2002. With arguably their best set of players in years, they will fancy their chances.

This is a huge game for Alun Wyn Jones, who will beat Richie McCaw’s Test record. With nine tests for the British and Irish Lions included, Jones will pick up cap number 149 in West Wales.

Welsh boss Wayne Pivac is under huge pressure right now. Fans are turning on him after just a handful of matches, so he can buy himself a little breathing space with a win on the day.

I expect this one to be an arm-wrestle, with the Welsh coming out on top by the slightest of margins.

Take Scotland with a 5.5 point advantage at -188.

There is no trophy to play for in Wales, but there certainly is in Rome. 

World Cup finalists England travel to the Eternal City intent on giving the perennial Six Nations whipping boys another day to forget.

The English are expected to dish out a big win at the Stadio Olimpico, and you would be foolish to back against them. They are the only team in the tournament not to have lost to the Italians, having won all of their 26 tests with more than 1,000 points racked up on aggregate.

England will be aiming to secure a 40 point+ win margin before putting their feet up in front of the TV. They will not know whether their efforts are good enough until France take on Ireland in Paris.

England -31.5 points gets you odds of -120. 

Ireland has been up and down in 2019, with more valleys than peaks explored. 

Yet still, the Green Machine finds itself within a bonus-point win of a championship. That alone should galvanize the Irish troops, but they face a wall of blue in Paris that is unlikely to relent.

The French have been outstanding at times over the past 12 months, and if not for Mohamed Haouas’ ridiculous rush of blood to the head against the Scots, they would likely be playing for a Grand Slam right now. 

Before the tournament, I predicted a French resurgence under Fabien Galthie and Shaun Edwards. I think we will see more positives tomorrow that will give fans of Les Bleus a lot to be happy about.

Still, Ireland has a better record between the two in recent years. They have lost to France once since 2011 and will be confident of getting the bonus point that secures the title.

Games between these two countries have been very tight in that timeframe, with two draws and a few games settled by a few points. I expect the same tomorrow, but with France getting revenge for this…
