Shakhtyor Soligorsk vs. BATE Borisov – Belarusian Premier League, November 7, 2020

It is probably not overblowing this game too much to suggest that it could decide who will win the Belarusian Premier League title this year.

BATE holds the slight advantage of being one point ahead at the moment.

But that could all change on Saturday.

MyBookie has Belarusian powerhouse BATE as slight favorites to win this one away from home on Saturday and take a huge step towards yet another league title. But Shakhtyor is at home.

So although this game could go either way, a win for the Soligorsk side has to be considered.

Shakhtyor Soligorsk vs. BATE Borisov Match Preview

It had looked as though Shakhtyor had missed its chance of pulling away from BATE – and the rest of the top teams. But, even though there have been some points dropped recently, other teams have faltered as well. The Soligorsk club must now not capitulate on Saturday.

The game between these two earlier in the season ended in a 2-2 draw, meaning that Shakhtyor’s superior goal difference could come into play in the event of a tie. But that would mean that Shakhtyor needs to win, or at least draw, with BATE this weekend.

Winning just four points from a possible nine in the last three games is largely the reason why BATE finds itself in this position now – and not already celebrating another championship. The home defeat to Dynamo was bad enough, but the draw with Isloch the week after definitely gave some new hope to its rivals.

Normal service was resumed last time out as Vitebsk was put to the sword, but it has been a frustrating season for BATE – and its manager, Kirill Alshevsky. He stepped into the role, inheriting a weaker squad than in previous years and has just about kept the team at the top. This weekend’s result will go a long way in deciding if he is to lift some more silverware this season.

  • The Draw

With so much pressure on both sides this weekend, we could well see a closely fought game that ends in the draw that only extends the uncertainty over the final destination of the league title this year. That would probably suit BATE more, but there could still be a few more twists and turns in store in the coming weeks.
