Serbia vs. Portugal – World Cup Qualifier, March 27, 2021

| March 26, 2021 9:10 am PDT

Following wins for both nations on Wednesday, Serbia and Portugal will aim to take control of Group A when they meet in Belgrade on Saturday, March 27.

Serbia came from behind to secure a 3-2 victory over the Republic of Ireland last time out, while the reigning European champions edged past Azerbaijan 1-0.

Before getting into my Serbia vs. Portugal prediction, let’s start by checking out the odds for this World Cup qualifier.

Serbia vs. Portugal Odds

Serbia to Win4.60
The Draw3.75
Portugal to Win1.71

As expected, the top-rated online sports betting sites are favoring Portugal to win this one. But I think you’d be foolish to write off Serbia altogether.

Fernando Santos’ men narrowly scraped past one of the weakest teams in Group A on Wednesday, while Serbia produced a spirited comeback to kick off their qualifying campaign with a win.

Serbia vs. Portugal Match Preview

Serbia went behind early against Ireland on Wednesday, but the team responded in an eye-catching fashion. Dusan Vlahovic scored just before half-time to level things up before Aleksandar Mitrovic bagged a second-half brace.

A late goal from the away side set up a nervy ending, yet Dragan Stojkovic’s men eventually held on to claim a deserved victory.

Despite heading into Wednesday’s clash on a four-match unbeaten streak, recent goalless draws against Panama and the Dominican Republic suggested that Serbia would struggle when it came to opening their World Cup qualifying account.

However, the Eagles flexed their muscles on Wednesday, with Dusan Tadic chalking up a hat-trick of assists.

Mitrovic only came on as a 63rd-minute substitute, yet he still managed to produce two moments of brilliance. Stojkovic will surely be thinking about handing the Fulham striker a place in the starting XI against Portugal.

Portugal was expected to cruise past Azerbaijan without any problems in midweek. In fact, you couldn’t find a price above 1.10 for Santos’ men to beat the minnows. But Cristiano Ronaldo and co. ended up registering a cagey 1-0 win.

The reigning European champions completely dominated Wednesday’s game. Not only did they rack up 29 shots (14 on target), but they also enjoyed 67% possession. Still, Maksim Medvedev’s own goal proved to be the difference between the two sides.

With big-name stars like Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, and Ruben Dias in the team, Portugal should have done better – much better!

Having said that, Santos’ men extended their impressive run last time out. They have only lost one of their last 11 matches in all competitions, with eight wins coming in that time.

There is a sense that the Euro 2016 champs got a complement against Azerbaijan. If that is true, they have certainly been given a much-needed wake-up call.

My Serbia vs. Portugal Betting Pick

  • Portugal to Win

If Portugal had thrashed Azerbaijan in midweek, I’m sure the away win price would have been lower for this matchup. But given that Santos’ men failed to live up to expectations, the odds for the Portugal win are bigger than expected here.

Serbia showed great determination to seal a comeback victory over Ireland on Wednesday, although Portugal poses a completely different threat altogether. The juicy price for the draw tempted me, but I’m expecting Portugal to bounce back a lay down a marker on Saturday.
