Sleeper Picks for the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions

| January 4, 2021 1:33 pm PDT

The odds for the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions are quite drastic. Heavy favorites like Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas are lurking in the +600 territory. Three more are inside +1000 (Rahm, DeChambeau, Schauffele).

On the opposite of the spectrum, Brian Gay and Richy Werenski are hanging out at +25000. Nick Taylor brings up the rear at MyBookie at an eye-opening +40000.

In the middle, there’s a ton of value present.

Remember, it’s the start of a new year, and there is no 36-hole cut. Just 42 players are teeing it up.

It’s the perfect time to gamble on a few Sentry Tournament of Champions sleepers. I got four in mind.

Cameron Champ +5000

It tends to get a bit windy on the island of Maui – a big reason why Coore and Crenshaw didn’t bother pinching in too many fairways during their $11 million renovation. This means low bullets off the tee are especially beneficial at Kapalua’s Plantation Course, and nobody executes those better than Cameron Champ.

The Texas A&M product delivered top-15s in each of his previous two trips to the TOC and arrives with plenty of positive vibes. 19th at the Masters and 8th at the Zozo Championship (last two starts). Also played the QBE Shootout with Tony Finau in December (T5).

Adam Scott +5000

Zero top-20s across six starts since the restart has caused Adam Scott to nosedive outside of the top 20 in the OWGR. Some of the best golf betting sites installed Adam at +4000, although his +5000 price tag at BetOnline warrants a distinction as one of the genuine Sentry TOC sleeper picks.

Scott’s ball-striking remains supreme, and it’s time to shake off the notion that he’s not a reliable putter. Adam used to be a bit sketchy on the greens, but the stats from the past two seasons highlight a player much-improved with the flat-stick.

Year PGA Tour Rank in SG: Putting
2015 157th
2016 129th
2017 128th
2018 165th
2019 31st
2020 49th

Mackenzie Hughes +12500

Quietly positioned inside the top-50 in the world, this 30-year-old Canadian makes his second start at the TOC on the heels of his berth in the 2020 TOUR Championship. Hughes’ prowess with the putter makes him a threat anytime he steps on the golf course, and he’s been knocking on the door for victory #2 for quite some time.

In 2020 alone, Mackenzie collected a runner-up, two thirds, and four other top-10s.

Most recently, Hughes was especially sharp en route to tying for second at the QBE Shootout. In fact, his partner that week is another one of my sleeper picks for the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Lanto Griffin +12500

Right on cue, Lanto Griffin is hot off his runner-up in Naples teaming with Mackenzie Hughes. And like Hughes, Lanto strolls into Hawaii with four competitive rounds at the Plantation Course under his belt.

Griffin fired four red numbers at the 2020 Sentry TOC on his way to posting a T14.

While nothing, in particular, stands out about his golf game, he’s steadily been on the uptick since winning the 2019 Houston Open. The laid-back atmosphere with no fans bodes well for his chances.
