Seattle Sounders vs. San Jose Earthquakes – MLS, November 8, 2020
The Quakes booked their place in the playoffs with an impressive 3-2 victory over LAFC on Wednesday, but they face a far tougher test on the final day of the regular season.
Matias Almeyda’s men travel to Washington to face the Sounders at CenturyLink Field on Sunday, November 8, with Seattle aiming to finish top in the Western Conference.
After discussing the bookies’ odds, I give my Seattle Sounders vs. San Jose Earthquakes prediction and betting pick.
Seattle Sounders vs. San Jose Earthquakes Odds
The top online betting sites view Seattle (1.66) as the clear frontrunner to win on Sunday. However, you’d be foolish to write off San Jose (4.65) altogether.
The Sounders have not been at their best in recent weeks, while the Quakes continue to spring surprises.
Seattle Sounders vs. San Jose Earthquakes Preview
It looked as though Seattle was heading for back-to-back defeats last time out. Javier Hernandez put LA Galaxy ahead with less than 15 minutes remaining, but Raul Ruidiaz scored a stoppage-time equalizer to save the day.
Of course, that is not the first time that Ruidiaz has dug his team out of a hole this year. The Peruvian has netted ten goals in 13 regular-season appearances in 2020, with many believing that his name deserves to be in the MVP hat.
Ruidiaz was sidelined for four games in October, and it showed. The Sounders only managed to pick up one win in his absence, meaning the Washington club has now won just one of their previous six outings.
Seattle has been in Supporters’ Shield contention for much of the campaign, although the team’s recent performances have seen Brian Schmetzer’s men fall by the wayside.
Still, let’s not forget that Seattle crushed San Jose 7-1 in September!
Matias Almeyda’s men will no doubt be quick to remind anyone that they managed to hold the Sounders to a goalless draw last month. Having suffered such a humiliating defeat a few weeks earlier, a draw probably felt more like a win to San Jose.
The previous encounter with Seattle came in the middle of a remarkable hot streak for the Quakes; a hot streak that they are still enjoying. Indeed, San Jose has only lost two of their previous nine games, with six defeats coming along the way.
Having seen off Real Salt Lake last week, the Quakes beat California rivals LAFC 3-2 on Wednesday. Chris Wondolowski got on the scoresheet once again last time out after netting a double against RSL.
Not so long ago, the playoffs were a distant dream for San Jose. But the club now has the opportunity to finish within three points of Seattle. That’s a phenomenal turnaround, right?
My Prediction and Betting Pick
Yes, Seattle has been much stronger than San Jose throughout the course of the season. But when you look at the recent form guide, the Quakes have outshone the Sounders lately.
It could be difficult for Almeyda’s to claim all three points on Sunday, but I can definitely see them securing a draw. Furthermore, the odds for the home win are pretty low here, with the price for the draw offering far better value.
