Seattle Sounders vs. Portland Timbers Betting Preview – MLS, September 6, 2020
When Seattle and Portland met at the end of last month, I was expecting a thrilling battle. After all, the Sounders are the defending MLS Cup champions, and the Timbers recently won the MLS is Back Tournament. However, it turned out to be a very one-sided game.
Seattle cruised past Portland, with the Washington club claiming a comfortable 3-0 victory. So, can the men from Oregon gain their revenge on Sunday, September 6? Read on to see my Seattle Sounders vs. Portland Timbers prediction and betting pick.
Seattle Sounders vs. Portland Timbers Odds
Despite Portland’s triumph in Florida last month, you can’t really argue with the odds for this game. The manner with which Seattle brushed aside the Timbers in their previous meeting was hugely impressive, so it’s no surprise to see the Sounders as the favorite here. Having said that, the high prices for the draw and the away win are bound to attract plenty of attention.
Let’s take a closer look at the two teams.
Seattle is clearly keen to make up for their disappointing Round of 16 exit at the MLS is Back Tournament. After crushing Portland, Brian Schmetzer’s side beat LAFC 3-1 last week before securing a hard-fought draw against Real Salt Lake in their most recent outing.
A three-game unbeaten run has seen the Sounders cement second place in the Western Conference, and the Washington club could finish the weekend on the top of the pile if things go their way. Only FC Dallas has conceded fewer goals than Seattle this term, while no team has lost fewer games in the division.
On the other hand, things haven’t gone to plan for Portland of late. Manager Giovanni Savarese would have been hoping that his players could pick up where they left off in Florida, but the Timbers have only managed to pick up one point from a possible nine since the resumption.
Following the defeat to Seattle and a crazy 4-4 draw with RSL, the Oregon outfit suffered a 3-2 loss to LA Galaxy last time out. Diego Valeri became only the third player in MLS history to rack up 80 goals and 80 assists when he netted an injury-time consolation strike in midweek, but Portland had very little else to get excited about.
It’s difficult to imagine the Timbers going four games without a win, although the Sounders will be confident of making that happen.
Seattle Sounders vs. Portland Timbers Prediction and Pick
Seattle Sounders to Win1.91
It’s impossible to forget about Seattle’s thumping win over Portland less than a fortnight ago. Of course, both sides have played a number of games since then. But while the Sounders have continued to impress, the Timbers have continued to go downhill. With both teams in contrasting form, I really like the look of the home win here.
