Seattle Sounders vs. Minnesota United – MLS, April 16, 2021
Four months after meeting in the 2020 Conference Finals, Seattle and Minnesota open their 2021 MLS accounts at Lumen Field on Friday, April 13.
The Sounders enjoyed another hugely successful campaign last year, reaching their fourth MLS Cup Final in five seasons. The Loons only finished two places behind Brian Schmetzer’s men in the Western Conference, although the Sounders ultimately had the last laugh.
After looking at the odds, I will share my Seattle Sounders vs. Minnesota United prediction and betting pick.
Odds for Seattle Sounders vs. Minnesota United
10bet views Seattle as the obvious favorite to claim all three points on Friday – and you can’t really argue with that viewpoint. After all, the Sounders are destined to kick off the new campaign in a familiar fashion.
Sure, the long odds for the draw and the away win are bound to attract attention from certain bettors, but there is no denying that Seattle is the stronger team in this matchup.
Seattle Sounders vs. Minnesota United Preview
Just in case you needed reminding, the Sounders further cemented their status as a Major League Soccer powerhouse last season – going all the way to yet another MLS Cup Final.
Unfortunately, Schmetzer’s men were unable to add to their 2016 and 2019 triumphs last year. But having reached four of the previous five showpieces, it was only fair that they gave someone else a shot at glory, right?
Seattle will obviously miss Jordan Morris’s creativity, who bagged 12 goals and nine assists in 29 appearances last term. Still, you can bet your bottom dollar that Raul Ruidiaz (14 goals, 4 assists) and Nicolas Lodeiro (8 goals, 8 assists) will hit the ground running this year.
With offseason signings like Joao Paulo and Fredy Montero strengthening the 2021 Seattle Sounders roster, the Washington club looks set for another dominant season.
Not only were the Sounders the second-highest scorers in the West last year, but they also boasted the best defensive record. Those statistics are difficult to ignore.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Loons are still hurting from their agonizing loss to Seattle in the 2020 Western Conference Final.
Adrian Heath’s men appeared to be heading for glory back in December, with goals from Emanuel Reynoso and Bakaye Dibassy giving them a 2-0 lead over the Sounders. But Schmetzer’s side bounced back in remarkable style, netting three goals in the last 15 minutes.
Minnesota’s 2020 campaign shouldn’t be defined by that moment, however. The Loons finished with the best points per game average (1.62) in their history last season and only ended up five points behind Seattle in the standings.
Kevin Molino has joined Columbus, leaving Heath with decisions to make in the attack. But if Robin Lod can emulate his 2020 tally of ten goals and four assists, Minnesota should be able to compete with the best in the West again this year.
It is worth noting that Minnesota has netted a combined total of 19 goals across four pre-season matches, five of which came in a 5-2 thrashing of the Crew – the defending MLS Cup champions.
Seattle vs. Minnesota Betting Pick
Seattle Sounders to Win1.80
The Loons enjoyed a standout campaign last year and have claimed some eye-catching results in the lead-up to the new season. Still, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that the home win is my Seattle Sounders vs. Minnesota United pick.
At the end of the day, the Sounders have been one of the most consistent teams in Major League Soccer for well over a decade now. For that reason, I’m backing them to kick off the 2021 campaign with a victory.
