Seattle Sounders vs. LA Galaxy – MLS, May 2, 2021

| May 1, 2021 5:24 am PDT

Galaxy’s 100% record will be put to the test this Sunday, May 2, when Greg Vanney’s men come up against the Sounders at Lumen Field.

Believe it or not – the Galaxy is the only team to have claimed maximum points in MLS this season. However, the Sounders also remain unbeaten, having thrashed Minnesota and drawn with LAFC.

Can the Galaxy make it three wins from three? Or will Seattle put Vanney’s men in their place?

In this Seattle Sounder vs. LA Galaxy betting preview, I discuss the bookmakers’ odds and analyze the teams before sharing my prediction and pick.

Seattle Sounders vs. LA Galaxy Odds

Seattle Sounders to Win1.51
The Draw4.15
LA Galaxy to Win6.00

Yes, the Galaxy has made an impressive start to the 2021 MLS campaign. But as the bookies’ odds indicate, Vanney’s side is still nowhere near Seattle’s level.

That said, the Los Angeles club is riding a wave of momentum at the moment. If you’re feeling brave, backing the Galaxy to beat – or even draw with – the Sounders could land you a tasty profit.

Can the Sounders Remain Unbeaten?

Brian Schmetzer’s men crushed Minnesota 4-0 on the opening weekend in true Sounders style – laying down a marker and sending out an early message to their MLS Cup rivals.

Joao Paulo opened the scoring with an excellent long-range strike, Raul Ruidiaz bagged a three-minute brace, while Fredy Montero marked his return to Seattle by completing the rout late on.

Schmetzer’s men were held to a 1-1 draw by LAFC last time out, but there is no shame in that. They created plenty of goalscoring opportunities against the bookies’ MLS Cup favorite, so they will surely create a lot more when the Galaxy comes to town.

The Sounders only lost six regular-season games en route to the MLS Cup final last year, scoring a whopping 44 goals along the way. Better still, they boasted the best defensive record in the Western Conference.

We may only be two games into the new campaign, but it’s already clear that the Sounders have picked up where they left off last season.

Will the Galaxy Win Again?

It’s fair to say that the Galaxy’s opening performances have been far from convincing this year. Still, the club is currently sitting pretty at the top of the Western Conference.

Following a 3-2 victory over Inter Miami in Week 1, the Los Angeles outfit beat the Red Bulls by the same scoreline last weekend. On both occasions, Javier Hernandez was the star of the show.

Having only managed to net two goals in 12 appearances (757 minutes) last term, Hernadez had been written off by many Galaxy supporters. Fast forward to today, and the Mexican striker has scored five goals in just two games this season.

Following a match-winning double against Miami, Hernadez netted his first MLS hat-trick down the Red Bulls last time out.

It goes without saying that Vanney will be eager to tighten things up defensively. But if Hernandez keeps scoring, the Galaxy will continue to win games.

My Sounders vs. Galaxy Prediction

  • The Draw

Understandably, the betting sites view Seattle as the clear favorite to win this one – and I completely agree with that viewpoint. But in my opinion, the price for the home win is painfully low.

While I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sounders claimed all three points on Sunday, the draw feels like the best value bet for Seattle Sounders vs. LA Galaxy.

Vanney’s men will be full of confidence after sealing back-to-back wins, so I can see them frustrating Seattle and coming away from Lumen Field with a point.

Let’s hope Hernandez is in the mood this weekend!
