Saratoga Racecourse Picks – Thursday, August 20, 2020
Saratoga Racecourse hosts the Tale of the Cat Stakes, on Thursday, August 20, 2020, along with eight other maiden, allowance, and claiming races.
The forecast for Thursday in Saratoga Springs, New York calls for continued sunny skies, a 10% chance of rain, highs in the mid-70s, and winds around eight mph.
Post time for the first race Thursday at Saratoga Racecourse is 12:50 PM (EDT). Now, let’s get right to my horse racing predictions, picks, and tips.
Pick for Saratoga Racecourse Race 2
This is a maiden special weight race for fillies and mares three years old and upwards running 1-1/8 miles for a purse of $72,000.
I’m sticking with the 8/5 morning line favorite for this race: Simply Sweet, with Junior Alvarado in the irons.
Incidentally, the only long-odds entry in this race (at 15/1) is at least that unlikely to finish in the money, so let’s save our longshot money for later.
- Win: Simply Sweet 8/5
Picks for Saratoga Racecourse Race 7
This is the Tale of the Cat Stakes, a race for four-year-olds and upward running six furlongs for a purse of $85,000.
I like the second-favored (2/1) entry in this stakes race: My Boy Tate, ridden by Jose Lezcano. This six-year-old gelding moneyed 11 of his 16 career starts, winning six of them.
There’s only one long-odds entry in this five-horse race, and that’s the 10/1 Ready to Escape, with Kendrick Carmouche in the irons. This five-year-old gelding finished in the money 11 of his 16 career starts and won four of them. I’m betting him across the board.
- Win: My Boy Tate 2/1
- Across the Board: Ready to Escape 10/1
Picks for Saratoga Racecourse Race 8
This is an allowance optional claiming race for New York state-foaled three-year-olds and upwards running 5-1/2 furlongs on turf for a purse of $67,000.
With so much star power in the irons for this race, I have to rely on the horses themselves to tell me who’s the boss, and Joel Rosario’s mount—the 6/1 under-favored The Important One—is telling me to buy a win ticket. This three-year-old filly moneyed in all three of her career starts, two of them wins.
And at 12/1, I think a show ticket is in order for Quality Stones, ridden by Kendrick Carmouche. This three-year-old filly moneyed two of her three career starts—both of them wins. In any other race, this might be an across the board recommendation, but here? Let’s be satisfied with a show ticket payday.
- Win: The Important One 6/1
- Show: Quality Stones 12/1
