Santa Anita Park Picks – Friday, October 9, 2020

| October 8, 2020 3:31 pm PDT

As always, Santa Anita brings the heat today with races full of underdog upsets and longshot bargain bets.

Remember that while I cover Friday’s richest races at Santa Anita Park, you can always find the full slate of matches at one of our recommended online racebooks.

So let’s move on to my Santa Anita picks and betting tips for Friday, October 9, 2020.

Pick for Santa Anita Park Race 1

This is a maiden special weight race for California-sired three-year-olds and upward running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $55,000.

Lots of star power riding in this maiden race, and I like the third-favored (4/1) entry—Chipper, with Flavien Prat in the irons. This three-year-old gelding moneyed two of his four career starts and has done well at longer distances in recent workouts.

There are several longshots in this match, but none of them show any indication they can finish in the money, particularly against the morning line’s four favorites.

  • Win: Chipper 4/1

Picks for Santa Anita Park Race 5

This is an allowance optional claiming race for California-bred or -sired three-year-olds and upward running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $57,000.

I’m sticking with the 5/2 morning line favorite here—Fratelli, with Flavien Prat aboard. This four-year-old gelding finished in the money for four of his five career starts, winning two of them.

At 12/1, Agamemnon, ridden by Tyler Baze, squeaks through my “Is this something?” test for bargain show bets. This three-year-old gelding moneyed one of his two career starts by breaking his maiden back in May at Santa Anita. He later performed poorly in an allowance race, but I think Baze can make the difference in this race. Still, I’m less confident than usual about this, so feel free to ignore my recommendation here.

  • Win: Fratelli 5/2
  • Show: Agamemnon 12/1

Pick for Santa Anita Park Race 8

This is an allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 1-1/8 miles on turf for a purse of $59,000.

I didn’t realize Flavien Prat was going to be my favorite jockey today until after I finished looking at the field for this race, I swear. Be that as it may, I like one of the second-favored (7/2) entries (there are two): Border Town, with Prat aboard. This four-year-old gelding moneyed six of his nine career starts, winning two. More importantly, Border Town has wins in 2020—something the morning line favorite cannot claim.

There are a few longer-odds entries in this race, but I don’t see any that have a good chance to finish in the money.

  • Win: Border Town 7/2
