Santa Anita Park Picks – Saturday, October 24, 2020
Santa Anita may not be open to spectators for the fall meet, but they sure are bringing the competition. I found plenty of underdog action at in the three races I chose to review for Saturday. I also found some solid bargain show wagers to please our bankrolls.
Remember that while I cover today’s three richest races at Santa Anita Park, you can always find the full race card at one of our recommended horse racing betting sites.
Read on for my Santa Anita Park picks and betting tips for Saturday, October 24, 2020.
Picks for Santa Anita Park Race 1
This is an allowance race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of about 5-1/2 furlongs on turf for a purse of $57,000.
I like the 2/1 morning line favorite for this race—Brickyard Ride, with Alexis Centeno in the irons. Not only does this three-year-old colt have the best record in this field—six money finishes in nine starts, four of them wins—but his pilot brings a seven-pound apprentice allowance to the game.
At 12/1, I have to buy a show ticket for Octopus, with Abel Cedillo aboard. This colt moneyed six of his eight career starts, winning two.
- Win: Brickyard Ride 2/1
- Show: Octopus 12/1
Pick for Santa Anita Park Race 5
This is an allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 1-1/16 miles for a purse of $59,000.
I’m backing the fourth-favored (4/1) entry in this race—Unbroken Star, ridden by veteran jockey Tyler Baze. This five-year-old gelding moneyed four of his 11 career starts, winning three of them.
There are no odds longer than 5/1 in this race, so there are no bargain show bets. Maybe next race…
- Win: Unbroken Star 4/1
Picks for Santa Anita Park Race 8 – Senator Ken Maddy Stakes
This is the Senator Ken Maddy Stakes (Grade III), a race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of 5-1/2 furlongs on turf for a purse of $100,000.
The question in this race is which horses will place second and third, because first place belongs to the 9/5 morning line favorite, Magic at Midnight, ridden by Abel Cedillo. This four-year-old filly won all four of her career starts.
For second and third place, I call the third-favored (4/1) Aqua Seaform Shame (four money finishes, six career starts, two wins) with Umberto Rispoli aboard, and the fourth-favored (6/1) Biddy Duke (14 money finishes in 19 starts, six of them wins), ridden by Juan J. Hernandez.
- Win: Magic at Midnight 9/5
- trifecta: Magic at Midnight, Aqua Seaform Shame, Biddy Duke (5-6-2)
