Santa Anita Park Picks – Friday, October 23, 2020
All my chosen races at Santa Anita Park today are maiden competitions, and despite the additional uncertainty of outcomes, I find winners for each of those races.
I cover today’s three richest races at Santa Anita Park, but you can always find the full slate of races at one of our recommended online racebooks.
Read on for my Santa Anita Park picks and betting tips for Friday, October 23, 2020.
Pick for Santa Anita Park Race 2
This is a maiden special weight race for two-year-old fillies running a distance of one mile for a purse of $55,000.
I like the 1/1 morning line favorite here—Flash Magic, with Flavien Prat in the irons. This filly moneyed both of her career starts (both second place) and has some solid times in her recent workouts. She’ll have to work hard to beat close competitors Beautiful Gift and Park Avenue (ridden by Abel Cedillo and Umberto Rispoli, respectively), but I expect her to do just that.
The other two contenders in this five-horse race are 30/1 longshots, so we’ll say no more about it.
- Win: Flash Magic 1/1
Pick for Santa Anita Park Race 5
This is a maiden special weight race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 5-1/2 furlongs on turf for a purse of $55,000.
I have to agree with the morning line in this race and buy a win ticket for the 8/5 favorite, Master Ryan, ridden by Abel Cedillo. Overall, this three-year-old gelding moneyed seven of his eight career starts.
Neither of the two longshots in this race have a realistic chance of finishing in the money, so let’s save it for another time.
- Win: Master Ryan 5/2
Picks for Santa Anita Park Race 9
This is a maiden special weight race for California-bred or -sired two-year-old fillies running a distance of 5-1/2 furlongs on turf for a purse of $55,000.
If the also-eligible Allie’s Pal, with Flavien Prat aboard, makes it into the race, bet this 8/5 entry for the win. This filly pulled seconds in both of her career starts, giving her the best record in this field.
If Allie’s Pal does not run, then your win ticket should be on Squared Shady, ridden by Mike E. Smith. This filly moneyed one of her two career starts.
As often happens with maiden races, there are plenty of long-odds contenders and none that show an indication that they might see a paycheck at the end of the race.
- Win: Allie’s Pal 8/5 (if starts)
- Win: Squared Shady 2/1 (otherwise)
