Santa Anita Park Picks – Saturday, February 6, 2021

| February 5, 2021 4:49 pm PDT

Santa Anita Park headlines four graded stakes competitions among its ten maiden, allowance, and claiming races, including the Grade III Las Virgenes Stakes, which awards points to hopeful fillies vying to run in this year’s Kentucky Oaks, the Grade I stakes race held at Churchill Downs the day before the Kentucky Derby.

There’s quite a bit to cover, so let’s get right to my Santa Anita Park picks and betting tips for all four stakes races on Saturday, February 6, 2021.

Pick for Santa Anita Park Race 3 — Las Virgenes Stakes

This is the Las Virgenes Stakes, a Grade III stakes race for three-year-old fillies running a distance of one mile for a purse of $200,000. The top four finishers earn points (10-4-2-1) toward entry in this year’s Kentucky Oaks.

My money is on one of the second-favored entries (there are two at 5/2) in this race — Kalypso, with Joel Rosario in the irons. This filly finished in the money for all five of her career starts, including the Santa Ynez Stakes (Grade II) and the Anoakia Stakes (Black Type) at Santa Anita, as well as the Starlet Stakes (Grade I) at Los Alamitos.

  •  Win: Kalypso 5/2

Picks for Santa Anita Park Race 4 — San Marcos Stakes

This is the San Marcos Stakes, a Grade II stakes race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of 1-1/4 miles on turf for a purse of $200,000.

I like the 2/1 morning line favorite for this race — Acclimate, with Tyler Baze aboard. This seven-year-old gelding finished in the money 11 of his 20 career starts, winning six. He’s won or placed in graded stakes races, including the John Henry Turf Championship Stakes at Satan Anita and the Del Mar Handicap at Del Mar, both in 2019.

At 15/1, I like Starting Over, ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, for a value show ticket. This four-year-old gelding moneyed four of his six career starts, winning one.

  •  Win: Acclimate 2/1
  •  Show: Starting Over 15/1

Pick for Santa Anita Park Race 7 — San Vicente Stakes

This is the San Vicente Stakes, a Grade II stakes race for three-year-olds running a distance of seven furlongs for a purse of $200,000.

While the top three contenders all have identical one-for-one starting records, it’s the 8/5 favorite I’m backing — Concert Tour, with Joel Rosario in the irons. As I said, this colt broke his maiden on his single career start, and more importantly, with a significantly higher speed figure than his two closest competitors in this field.

  •  Win: Concert Tour 8/5

Pick for Santa Anita Park Race 8 — Thunder Road Stakes

This is the Thunder Road Stakes, a Grade III stakes race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $100,000.

I’m backing one of the third-favored entries (there are two at 4/1) in this race — Hit the Road, ridden by Umberto Rispoli. This four-year-old colt moneyed four of his seven career starts, winning four of them. His latest win was the Oceanside Stakes (Black Type) at Del Mar back in July.

I don’t see either of the longer-odds entries in this race doing anything but chasing the other horses across the finish line, so save your long money.

  •  Win: Hit the Road 4/1
