Santa Anita Park Picks – Friday, February 19, 2021
Santa Anita Park has a full racing schedule for Friday, including maiden, starter, allowance, and claiming matches on both the main track and on the turf course.
I review the three richest races here, but you can find Santa Anita Park’s full nine-race card for Friday — including entries, jockeys, M/L odds, and wagering options — at one of our recommended horse racing betting sites.
Read on for my Santa Anita Park picks and betting tips for Friday, February 19, 2021.
Pick for Santa Anita Park Race 1
This is a maiden special weight race for three-year-olds running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $61,000.
I’m sticking with the 9/5 morning line favorite for this maiden race — Du Jour, ridden by Flavien Prat. This colt moneyed both of his career starts.
I don’t have a value show bet recommendation to make, other than to point out that there are some longshots in this race, including one at 50/1, but not one of them looks likely to finish in the money, so save yours.
- Win: Du Jour 9/5
Pick for Santa Anita Park Race 3
This is a maiden special weight race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of 6-1/2 furlongs on turf for a purse of $61,000.
I’m going with the fourth-favored (4/1) entry in this race — Starship Chewbacca, with Jessica Pyfer aboard. This four-year-old gelding failed only once to money in his five career starts, which gives him a better record than any of his competition. Also important is the seven-pound apprentice allowance Pyfer brings to the ride.
I don’t think any of the longer-odds entries in this field will get to the finish line in time for payday.
- Win: Starship Chewbacca 4/1
Pick for Santa Anita Park Race 9
This is a maiden special weight race for fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $61,000.
I agree with the morning line for this race, and I’m buying a win ticket for the 2/1 favorite — Rockie Causeway, with Mario Gutierrez in the irons. This four-year-old filly moneyed four of her five career starts.
The morning line has half this field at 10/1 odds or longer (including two 30/1 longshots), and not a single one of them is likely to see a payday at the finish line.
- Win: Rockie Causeway 2/1
