Sanderson Farms Championship Sleepers for 2020 – Another First-Time Winner in Jackson?
If you’re wondering whether or not this is the week to roll the dice on some fliers, check the following names out.
- Sebastian Munoz
- Cameron Champ
- Ryan Armour
- Cody Gribble
- Peter Malnati
- Nick Taylor
Not exactly a “who’s who” in the game of golf, yet those are the last six winners at the Country Club of Jackson.
Stewart Cink just emerged out of nowhere in Napa Valley, and I didn’t catch Hudson Swafford’s name on any betting previews for Punta Cana.
With that in mind, let’s start keying in on some Sanderson Farms Championship sleepers.
Carlos Ortiz +6000
His past performances at this venue can’t be ignored – not at +6000.
Carlos finished 3rd at the 2018 Sanderson Farms Championship and landed 4th here in 2019. He’s 31-under-par in eight career rounds at the John Fought renovation and made 20 birdies last time out at the Safeway Open.
Also working in Ortiz’s favor is his propensity to play well at this particular time of the year.
The 29-year-old Mexican golfer produced three top-10s last year – all of which were top-4s registered in the fall portion of the season.
Sepp Straka +7500
Could we see a tall and imposing former Georgia Bulldog golfer win for the second straight week?
Sepp Straka struggled with consistency for the better part of last year, but the page has officially been turned. 14th and 33rd in his first two starts of the “Super Season” shine some light at a breakthrough performance being in store.
Although the sample size is incredibly small, ranking 6th in total driving efficiency and 10th in putts per round is evidence that Sepp’s game seems to have turned a corner.
Robby Shelton +17500
Digging a little further down the sheet to find this Sanderson Farms Championship sleeper, this one shares some similar traits to the last. Another former standout in the SEC, Robby Shelton was up-and-down throughout his rookie campaign in 2019-20.
However, this Alabama native is extremely fond of competing in this region in the nation and is a good bet to play well this week.
Both of Shelton’s KFT victories last season occurred in Tennessee, and he lost one in a playoff in his home state.
28th here in 2019, plus he ended the summer on a high note by surging into the BMW Championship.
Sean O’Hair +17500
If the streak of first-time winners at the Sanderson Farms Championship gets snapped, it could be a former superstar on tour that gets credited with ending the six-year run.
It’s been nine years seen Sean O’Hair has visited the winner’s circle, and he’s battled through injuries that made him question his status in the game. Nevertheless, the man once dubbed as one of the few capable of taking Tiger down is back with an invigorated state of mind.
Sean got a taste of what getting back into contention feels like playing in the final group last Saturday at Corales Golf Course. At the handsome price of +17500, it’s not a bad idea to lock him in as a Sanderson Farms Championship pick.
