San Francisco 49ers vs. Arizona Cardinals Betting Preview – NFL Week 16, 2020

The 49ers will feel at home playing against the Cardinals, having moved their home fixtures to Arizona recently following Covid-19 restrictions in San Francisco.

The 49ers have been on a poor run as of late, having only picked up one win from their last five games and losing the last three in a row.

The Cardinals appear to have saved their best football for the end of the season, having won their last two in a row, which ended a run of three losses. The defeats did come against the Rams, Patriots, and the Seahawks, however, and each game was relatively close.

The Cardinals have edged the recent head to head record against the 49ers three to two. One thing to note is that the last five games have seen the home and away side alternate victories, and if that trend continued, it would mean a win for Arizona.

49ers vs. Cardinals Odds

49ers +3.5-110
Cardinals -3.5-110
49ers To Win+170
Cardinals To Win-215
Over 50.5 Points-110
Under 50.5 Points-110

I think the bookmakers have this game priced spot on with Arizona marginal favorites, which offers value all across the board.

49ers News

After a good start to the season, the 49er’s campaign has fallen apart recently, having only picked up one win from their last seven games. They actually have a positive record away from ‘home’ this year, having won four of their seven games on the road.

Despite the 49er’s poor season, they have remained robust in defense as they rank in the top ten for the least amount of yards per game conceded and least rushing and passing yards conceded.

Their weak link is in attack, having only averaged 23 points per game scored.

Trying to analyze the 49ers is difficult at times as they have just been average most of the time this season. They never seem to be terrible, but on the flip side, they aren’t ever exceptional either.

Cardinals News

The Cardinals have a positive record of 8-6 this season, which currently finds them in the sixth position in the NFC.

They have won four of their seven games at home, but they have lacked consistency as of late, having failed to back up any of their last two wins with a victory. Can the third time be a charm?

The Cardinals have lost five of their last six games against the spread and four of their last five at home against the spread too. However, at home, four of the last five games have seen over the points betting total scored.

Looking at Arizona’s stats this season, you can see that apart from their passing yards gained, they have on the whole done well. Oddly, however, they have the best receiver in the league in DeAndre Hopkins, who has 1324 receiving yards to his name to date. He was a key figure in their recent win against the Eagles.

You can see that they more often than not like to run the ball, though, as they are averaging just under 150 years gained per game, which is the sixth-highest in the league. One slight disappointment will be turning yards gained into points as they have the third-highest average gained per game this year but are only the tenth highest scorers in the NFL.

Linebacker Hasson Reddick has been their stand out in defense this season as he ranks fifth in the league for most sacks made. However, as a team, they have made the fifth-highest number of tackles, so the 49ers can expect a physical game.

49ers vs. Cardinals Pick

  • Cardinals To Win

I’m going to take the Cardinals to edge out the 49ers in this one. They are improving week upon week and have much more to play for here. Although the spread is relatively small, I won’t take them against it, given their poor handicapping record as of late.
