There were plenty of tough moments for the NC Dinos over the past month or so, but the team survived them to keep the top spot in the KBO standings and even build a small gap. The leaders face the unpredictable Lions next.

Despite Samsung’s low league position, that’s a dangerous opponent with wins over some of the top sides in the country.

Those of you who have been following my KBO posts know my opinion of the Samsung Lions. This is a team with a high ceiling, but a frustrating lack of consistency. We’ve seen them beaten some of the top baseball sides in South Korea and lose against the worst.

A good example of the strong moments of the Lions is the demolition of the second-placed Kiwoom Heroes on Sunday. The offense scored 14 runs and looked dominant.

That’s why writing Samsung off in the clash against the Dinos would be foolish. And yet, the Lions are expected to start a pitcher that has been very shaky. Tae In Won has a 10.59 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP over the past 3 days.

He’s been punished by all sorts of teams, so relying on him to stop the best offense in the country is probably unrealistic. Samsung’s batters will have to step up big time to cover for Won or the Lions are likely to lose this one.

If I have to select one reason why the NC Dinos have been leading the KBO for most of the season, it’s the team’s resilience. It all started with a bunch of close victories early in the campaign that showed mental toughness.

The past month or so provided further evidence that the Dinos have an excellent fighting spirit. The team was struggling a bit and was pushed hard by the Heroes and the Twins at different moments.

And yet, NC managed to hold on to the top spot and now has opened a small lead of 2.5 victories with less than a month to go.

The Dinos have a good opportunity to extend the gap or at least keep it intact in the next series. They are projected to start Young Gyu Kim in the opener and that could be a problem. He’s been inconsistent this season, but his stats have improved lately.

On the bright side, the team has the best offense in South Korea and will face a struggling pitcher, so the Dinos should be able to find plenty of runs.

I don’t trust the starting pitchers in this clash, so I believe that going for the over 10.5 runs is the way to go. Both the Lions and the Dinos have the potential to explode on Tuesday and the line should be covered rather comfortably.
