Roma vs. Manchester United – Europa League, May 6, 2021

| May 5, 2021 5:24 am PDT

Roma faces the almost impossible task of overturning Manchester United’s 6-2 advantage when the teams clash for the second leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday, May 6.

The Italians must produce a Herculean effort if they want to reach the final, having crumbled at Old Trafford last week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have all but secured their place in the showpiece, although they can’t afford to be complacent.

I’ll tell you everything you need to know about wagering on the second leg in this Roma vs. Manchester United betting preview. I cover the odds, analyze both sides, and share my prediction and pick.

Roma vs. Manchester United Odds

Roma to Win3.60
The Draw3.85
Manchester United to Win1.86

Understandably, the top online betting sites view Man Utd as the favorite to win on Thursday. The EPL giant was immense in the first leg, and the bookies are expecting a similar outcome this time around.

Roma has no choice but to throw everything at the Red Devils. However, an all-out attacking approach could ultimately work against the Italian side.

Can Roma Complete a Shock Comeback?

Roma went behind after just nine minutes in the first leg, but goals from Lorenzo Pellegrini and Edin Dzeko saw the Italians head into half-time with an unexpected 2-1 lead.

But after the break, the floodgates opened.

Man Utd scored five second-half goals to effectively end Roma’s chances of reaching the Europa League final. If Paulo Fonseca’s men want to advance, they will need to score four goals without conceding on Thursday.

Unfortunately, that isn’t likely to happen.

The Giallarossi suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Sampdoria on Sunday, meaning they have lost three of their previous four Serie A games.

To make matters worse, Fonseca’s men have only managed to win one of their last eight league matches.

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that Fonseca will part ways with the club at the end of the season. He will want to end his reign on a high, but his team will need to perform a miracle for that to happen.

Man Utd Already Has One Foot in the Final

Having made an unconvincing start to the first leg, the Red Devils flexed their muscles in the second half and sent out a statement of intent to the rest of the competition.

Edinson Cavani netted a double, while Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood also got on the scoresheet. However, there is no hiding from the fact that Bruno Fernandes was the star of the show – again!

The Portuguese playmaker bagged two goals and two assists last week, taking his tally for the season to 26 goals and 16 assists. You’d be a fool to bet against him adding to his impressive record on Thursday.

United’s match against Liverpool was postponed on Sunday after fans broke into Old Trafford, but that has only given Solskjaer’s men more time to rest and prepare for the trip to Rome.

At the end of the day, the Red Devils have only lost one of their previous 27 Premier League games and are currently enjoying a 13-match unbeaten streak in the EPL. When you consider that record, it is difficult to imagine them losing to Roma.

My Roma vs. Man Utd Prediction and Pick

  • Manchester United to Win

Fonseca’s men have to go for the risk on Thursday, but that is likely to leave them exposed at the back. Given that Man Utd is one of the best counter-attacking teams in Europe, I’m backing the EPL side to exploit Roma’s exposed backline.

Considering what happened in the first leg, you shouldn’t be shocked to learn that the away win is my Roma vs. Manchester United betting pick.
