Rennes vs. Chelsea Betting Preview – Champions League, November 24, 2020

| November 23, 2020 4:31 am PDT

Chelsea can all but secure a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League with a victory over Rennes in France on Tuesday.

The Blues are unbeaten in the Europe this term and sit top of Group E on seven points – six points ahead of last-place Rennes

If you’re planning to wager on Tuesday’s Champions League clash, make sure you check out my Rennes vs. Chelsea prediction and betting pick below.

Rennes vs. Chelsea Odds

Rennes to Win 4.85
The Draw 4.15
Chelsea to Win 1.66

In all honesty, I expected the odds gap to be slightly smaller for this matchup. Yes, Chelsea (1.66) deserves the favorite tag. But I’m surprised that the price for the Rennes win (4.85) is so high.

The French side is no pushover, especially on home soil. I can see the big odds for the draw (4.15) attracting plenty of attention.

Assessing the Teams

It’s fair to say that Rennes’ debut Champions League campaign has not gone to plan so far. Julien Stephan’s men were held to a draw by Krasnodar on Matchday 1, before suffering back-to-back defeats against Sevilla and Chelsea.

The Black and Reds were completely outclassed by Chelsea at the beginning of November, with Timo Werner netting a brace. Of course, Dalbert Henrique’s first-half red card didn’t help matters. But even if Rennes had a full complement of players, I still believe the team would have struggled to keep the EPL giant at bay.

Things have also been falling apart domestically for Rennes. Following a strong start to the 2020/21 Ligue 1 campaign, Stephan’s side has only managed to win one of their previous five league matches, with three defeats coming in their least four outings.

Needless to say, the Red and Blacks are struggling to juggle their domestic and European commitments.

On the other hand, Chelsea seems to have found the perfect balance this term. The Blues find themselves among the early frontrunners in the Premier League following three straight wins, while they are also top of Group E.

In fact, Lampard’s men head into Tuesday’s clash on a nine-game unbeaten streak in all competitions (six wins, three draws). The team has kept a remarkable seven clean sheets in that time, including three successive Champions League shutouts.

There is no denying that Edouard Mendy has made a huge impact since arriving in London. The goalkeeper – who joined Chelsea from Rennes – has been immense between the sticks, while experienced center-back Thiago Silva has also been a revelation following his move from PSG.

With the fellow summer signings Werner, Ziyech, and Havertz thriving in attack, Chelsea are proving to be a formidable opponent this season.

Rennes vs. Chelsea Pick

  • Chelsea to Win

I was tempted to sway towards to the draw here. After all, Rennes is not a bad team, and the price for the draw is very attractive.

But having taking everything into consideration, I can’t see Chelsea failing to win on Tuesday. The Blues are on a roll right now. The team is functioning perfectly at both ends of the pitch, so I’m confident that Lampard’s men will claim all three points.
