Real Sociedad vs. Villarreal – La Liga, November 29, 2020

It seems that no team can stop Real Sociedad at the moment as they are on a six-game winning streak in La Liga, and atop of that, they conceded only two goals in the process. The Whites and Blues are unbeaten in the last five matches in all competitions and a 0-0 draw with AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League spoiled their four-game winning run. Sociedad has a solid chance to play in Europe in spring, while they are at the top of La Liga with 23 points after ten rounds, three more than the second-placed Atletico Madrid.

Villarreal is also in fine form lately as they are unbeaten in the last 11 matches in all competitions. The Yellow Submarine was on a four-game winning streak before playing a couple of draws with Real Madrid in La Liga and Maccabi Tel Aviv in the UEL, where they need one more point to secure a place in the knockout stage. In the league, Villarreal is 3rd with 19 points.

Take a look at my Real Sociedad vs. Villarreal prediction and pick, after I start with the latest odds.

Real Sociedad vs. Villarreal Odds

Sociedad (-0.5) +108
Villarreal (+0.5) -128
Sociedad to Win +125
Villarreal to Win +242
Draw +270
Over 2.5 -125
Under 2.5 +118

Real Sociedad Team News and Stats

League leaders ahead of the round, Real Sociedad heads into this game with the league’s second-highest goals per game average (2.10) and one of the finest defenses (0.40 goals allowed per game) in Europe. All seven La Liga wins to date (D2, L1) have seen them score the opening goal and register a first-half clean sheet.

The hosts’ current form gives them real hope of ending some bizarre recent history seen in this H2H, characterized by the visiting side of the day winning the previous four La Liga duels by precisely one goal, despite not leading at halftime on any of those four occasions.

Imanol Alguacil will be without Jon Guridi (muscle), Asier Illarramendi (hip), Luca Sangalli (knee), David Silva (muscle), and Alex Sola (knee).

Villarreal Team News and Stats

Flying high themselves, Villarreal (W5, D4, L1) recently snapped a streak of three straight La Liga away trips without a goal, but have still found themselves scoring the opener only four times at all venues. Additionally, the Yellow Submarine is without a win in their two league games as a traveling outsider (D1, L1) and the match favorite of the day is yet to lose in their La Liga campaign (W6, D4).

On the brighter side for Villarreal, their three halftime leads secured in this La Liga season have all resulted in two-goal wins, protected by a second-half goal difference of +6 at all venues (7-1). That gives them all the more reason to open this match well and strive to become the first visiting team to score in the opening 45 minutes at Sociedad this season.

Unai Emery cannot count on Alberto Moreno (knee), while Paco Alcacer is questionable to face Sociedad with a muscle injury.

Real Sociedad vs. Villarreal Pick

Villarreal won five of the previous ten H2H encounters (D1, L4), including two of the last three (L1), while the Yellow Submarine was victorious in three of the past four meetings at Reale Seguros Stadium (L1). Considering how these teams are playing at the moment and their unbeaten streaks, I am leaning toward a draw in this one.

I am not going to back it, though, as I am backing BTTS only because I believe Villarreal has what it takes to penetrate through a sturdy Sociedad defense and score at least a goal. Sociedad conceded just four in ten La Liga games, and I think it’s about time they allow a goal or two. They shouldn’t have problems scoring on the other end,. Four of the previous six H2Hs produced goals on both sides.
