Real Salt Lake vs. Vancouver Whitecaps – MLS, June 18, 2021

| June 17, 2021 6:37 am PDT

Real Salt Lake will be looking to build on their impressive start to the 2021 MLS season when Vancouver visits Rio Tinto Stadium on Friday, June 18.

While multiple teams in the Western Conference have already played two or three games more than RSL, Freddy Juarez’s men have lost just one of their six matches this year. They find themselves eighth in the standings as a result.

Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have only managed to win two of their seven outings this term (one draw, four defeats) and head into the weekend on a three-game losing streak.

I provide my prediction and pick for Real Salt Lake vs. Vancouver Whitecaps in this betting preview, along with the odds for Friday’s clash and some analysis of the teams.

Latest Odds for RSL vs. Vancouver

Real Salt Lake to Win1.64
The Draw3.70
Vancouver Whitecaps to Win5.25

Although I’m not surprised that 10bet views Real Salt Lake (1.64) as an out-and-out favorite to win this one, the price for the Vancouver win (5.25) feels needlessly high.

Yes, RSL has made a strong start to the campaign, while the Caps have struggled of late. But you could find some serious value when you step away from the home win here.

I assess both sides’ form below.

Previewing Real Salt Lake vs. Vancouver

Real Salt Lake finished second from bottom in the 2020 Western Conference with only five wins to their name. This time around, Juarez’s men find themselves in a far stronger position.

Back-to-back wins over Minnesota, and Sporting KC saw RSL make a perfect start to the 2021 MLS season.

A narrow loss to San Jose followed, but Juarez’s men managed to record three straight draws soon after.

There is no hiding from the fact that RSL is on a four-match winless run at the moment. But after preventing Nashville, Dallas, and Minnesota from winning, the team from Utah looks like a completely different animal this year.

Only two players – LA Galaxy’s Chicharito and SKC’s Daniel Salloi – have racked up more goal involvements than RSL duo Rubio Rubin and Damir Kreilach in 2021. The former has bagged four goals and two assists this term, while the latter has three goals and three assists under his belt.

If Rubin and Kreilach continue to fire, the Claret & Cobalt will continue to climb the ladder.

When the Whitecaps took four points from their opening two games back in April, things looked up for the Canadian club. After beating Portland, the Caps claimed an impressive draw with Toronto.

But since then, Marc Dos Santos’ men have only managed to claim three points from a possible 15, with defeats to Colorado, Minnesota, SKC, and Houston coming in that time.

To make matters worse, no team in the West has netted fewer goals than Vancouver this season.

Having fired a blank in three of their previous five matches, the Canadians have scored just six goals in seven encounters this term.

As things stand, Minnesota and Dallas are the only two sides below Vancouver in the Western Conference. With three consecutive losses behind them, it is difficult to imagine the Whitecaps winning on Friday.

My Top Bet for RSL vs. Whitecaps

  • The Draw

In my opinion, the price for the home win offers very little value here. Sure, Real Salt Lake has gained plenty of admirers this year. But let’s not forget that Juarez’s men have drawn each of their last three games.

With that in mind, the draw is my Real Salt Lake vs. Vancouver Whitecaps prediction. Regardless of their recent run, the Caps are more than capable of snatching a point in Utah.
