Real Salt Lake vs. Sporting Kansas City Betting Preview – MLS, November 8, 2020
With the eight playoff places already secured in the Western Conference, Real Salt Lake has nothing to play for on the final day of the MLS regular season
But the Wizards, who visit Rio Tinto Stadium on Sunday, November 8, can clinch top spot in the division with a win in Utah.
Keep reading to see my Real Salt Lake vs. Sporting Kansas City prediction and betting pick.
Real Salt Lake vs. Sporting Kansas City Odds
Considering that Real Salt Lake (2.70) is second-bottom in the Western Conference and Sporting Kansas City (2.45) is top of the standings, I was expecting the odds gap to be bigger for this matchup.
Of course, RSL will be desperate not to finish bottom. But Peter Vermes’ men will surely be doing everything they can to secure first place in the West.
Assessing the Teams
Put simply, Real Salt Lake has been nowhere near good enough this year.
The Claret & Cobalt finished third in the West last season, and the Utah club was tipped to enjoy another successful campaign this time around. But unfortunately, the team has failed to reach last term’s level.
Freddy Juarez’s men have enjoyed some eye-catching victories over some of the best sides in the division. A 3-0 win against LAFC in September springs to mind, with last month’s 2-1 victory over Portland Timbers still fresh in the memory.
But at the end of the day, RSL has managed to pick up just five wins in 21 regular-season outings this season.
To make matters worse, Juarez’s side was beaten 2-1 by LA Galaxy last time out, meaning the club could finish rock bottom of the table if things don’t go their way on Sunday.
At the other end of the standings, the Wizards know a victory in Utah will see them crowned champions of the West. Sporting KC has two points less than second-place Portland, but with two games in hand over the Timbers, Vermes’ men can finish top on a points-per-game basis.
I think it’s fair to say that SKC has not been the most consistent side in the division this year, although the team does appear to have hit form at just the right time.
A run of one defeat in their last seven games has seen the Wizards cement first place in the standings, with victories over Colorado Rapids and FC Cincinnati coming in their last two outings.
SKC also heads into Sunday’s showdown on the back of successive clean sheets. Erik Hurtado and Gadi Kinda have kept the goals flowing at the top end of the pitch, but veteran goalkeeper Tim Melia must also be given credit for the team’s recent success.
Real Salt Lake vs. Sporting Kansas City Pick
Sporting Kansas City to Win2.45
In my eyes, the odds for the away win are too high to ignore here. Sporting KC currently holds a 14-point lead over RSL, so it only makes sense to back the Wizards.
Vermes’ men will be eager to cap off the regular season by clinching first place in the West, and I can’t see the Claret & Cobalt spoiling the party.
