Rangers vs. Benfica – Europa League, November 26, 2020

Can anyone stop Rangers right now?

Steven Gerrard’s men extended their unbeaten streak to 20 games at the weekend, leaving them 11 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Benfica came from two goals down to rescue a 3-3 draw when the two sides met in Portugal on Matchday 3. With both teams on seven points in Group D, Thursday’s clash is destined to be a thriller.

Rangers vs. Benfica Odds

Rangers to Win2.10
The Draw3.30
Benfica to Win3.45

The fact that the leading online sportsbooks view Rangers (2.10) as the favorite to win this clash speaks volumes about just how good the Scottish side has been this season.

Last term, Benfica (3.45) would have been expected to beat the Gers with ease. But Gerrard’s men will be confident of challenging even the best teams in Europe at the moment.

Rangers vs. Benfica Preview

I think the Rangers can count themselves pretty unfortunate to have come away from Portugal with only one point earlier in the month. Gerrard’s side led 3-1 until the 77th minute before Benfica scored two late goals to earn a draw.

However, after putting in such a spirited performance in their previous meeting with the Eagles, the Scottish side will be confident of winning the reverse fixture on home soil.

Not only have the Rangers been racking up win after win this season, but they have also kept a remarkable number of clean sheets in the process. The Glasgow outfit has played 15 domestic games in 2020/21, scoring 41 goals while conceding just three.

Following an 8-0 thrashing of Hamilton before the international break, the Gers returned to action with a 4-0 victory over Aberdeen on Sunday. These results typify the Rangers’ season perfectly.

On the flip side, Benfica has only managed to win one of their previous four outings in all competitions. Jorge Jesus’ men edged past lower-league side Paredas 1-0 in the Taca de Portugal on Saturday, yet they have lost their last two Primeira Liga matches.

The Eagles are used to dominating Portuguese soccer, but it is clear that they are not going to have it all their own way this term. Indeed, the Lisbon club is already five points off the pace in their domestic title race.

Benfica kicked off their Europa League campaign with back-to-back victories over Lech Poznan and Standard Liege, yet Rangers gave Jesus’ men a run for their money on Matchday 3.

Darwin Nunez netted a stoppage-time equalizer against the Gers, taking his tally to four goals in three Europa League appearances this season. Needless to say, the Rangers will be eager to keep the 21-year-old quiet on Thursday.

Rangers vs. Benfica Pick

  • Rangers to Win

Not so long ago, backing the Rangers to beat Benfica would have seemed like a crazy idea. But given the form that Gerrard’s men are in right now, I think you’d be foolish to bet against them winning on Thursday.

The Gers have been immense at both ends of the pitch in recent months, while Benfica has not been overly convincing lately.
