PSG vs. Barcelona – Champions League, March 10, 2021

| March 8, 2021 10:40 am PDT

PSG carries a seemingly unassailable 4-1 lead into the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against Barcelona.

The Parisians host the second leg at Parc des Princes on Wednesday, March 10, having demolished the Catalans at Camp Nou three weeks ago.

I share my PSG vs. Barcelona prediction and pick below. But first, let’s kick things off by taking a look at the betting odds.

Barcelona to Win2.95

The leading online sportsbooks are favoring PSG (2.10) to win the second leg and advance into the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday.

We all know that Barcelona (2.95) has a mountain to climb in order to overturn the current deficit, but that doesn’t mean to say that the visitors can’t win the second leg.

Let’s take a closer look at the teams.

PSG vs. Barcelona Preview

When Lionel Messi put Barcelona ahead from the penalty spot in the first leg, everything was going to plan for Ronald Koeman’s side. But after that, it was all about one man – Kylian Mbappe.

The 22-year-old sensation netted a sublime hat-trick to humiliate the Catalans in their own backyard, with Moise Kean also getting on the scoresheet to complete the 4-1 rout.

The Parisians suffered a shock 2-0 loss to Monaco in their next game. But since then, three straight clean-sheet victories have seen Mauricio Pochettino’s men progress in both Ligue 1 and the French Cup.

Following his remarkable treble at Camp Nou, Mbappe has bagged braces in two of his last three outings. The forward scored twice as PSG beat Dijon 4-0 before adding another double to his tally in Saturday’s 3-0 victory Brest.

The French giant made it all the way to the Champions League final last season, only to fall to Bayern Munich at the last hurdle. Needless to say, Pochettino’s men will be desperate to see off Barca and go one better this term.

Having made a seriously shaky start to the season, it feels like Barcelona has turned things around over the past couple of months.

Of course, the 4-1 loss in the first leg means that Koeman’s men must perform a minor miracle in order to qualify for the UCL quarter-finals. But when it comes to their domestic commitments, the Catalans have improved drastically.

A 16-game unbeaten streak in La Liga – 13 wins, 3 draws – has seen Barcelona close the gap on Atletico Madrid to just three points at the top of the table. Given that Atletico was miles ahead a couple of months back, Barca’s recent efforts can’t be ignored.

Having said that, it still feels as though Koeman’s men are nowhere near the level of Europe’s top teams at the moment.

Barcelona produced a famous comeback to knock PSG out of the 2016/17 Champions League, although it is difficult to imagine that kind of turnaround happening again.

PSG vs. Barcelona Pick

  • Barcelona to Win

Barcelona has no choice but to go for broke on Wednesday. I’m not saying that the Catalans will do enough to qualify for the quarter-finals, but I can see them winning the second leg.

On the flip side, Pochettino will probably be happy for his players to sit back and defend their hefty advantage. Let’s not forget that PSG could lose 3-0 and still advance.
