Predictions and Picks for the 2022 PGA Championship
The PGA Tour will embark on its second major of the season this week. Southern Hills Country Club will host the 104th PGA Championship from May 19 to May 22.
Phil Mickelson is the defending PGA Championship winner, but he won’t participate in this year’s event. Tiger Woods will return for his second event of 2022. Woods won the 2007 PGA Championship at Southern Hills.
Can Scottie Scheffler capture his second major of the season? Will we see another first-time major winner? We’ll answer those questions and more in my top picks and DFS lineup.
Value Picks for the PGA Championship
We’ve seen many instances of a sleeper or longshot winning a major championship. Phil Mickelson did it last season, so let’s examine the top sleepers for the 2022 PGA Championship.
Corey Conners (+6600)
This slot initially belonged to Paul Casey, but he withdrew from the PGA Championship. We had to make a last-second change with Corey Conners.
We don’t talk about Conners among the stars of the PGA Tour, but he has a few quality finishes this season. He has five finishes or 12th or better, including a major-best sixth-place finish in the 2022 Masters.
This season has been a big improvement for Conners. He is moving closer and closer to his first PGA Tour victory since the 2019 Valero Texas Open. Could he break through for his first major championship?
Last year, Conners surprised everyone with a strong first round in the PGA Championship.
- 6 birdies
- 1 bogey
Conners held a two-stroke lead following the first round. Unfortunately, that was his lone round under par, finishing even-par in a tie for 17th. At least we know Conners has the experience of leading a major.
He isn’t one of the top contenders, but his success this season gives me confidence in him to pull off an upset. I wouldn’t count out Conners for the 2022 PGA Championship.
Gary Woodland (+12500)
It’s hard to believe Gary Woodland hasn’t scored a PGA Tour victory since the 2019 U.S. Open. I’m sure Woodland would love to end that streak with his second major championship.
Woodland had a tough start to the 2021-22 season. He missed the cut in five of his first seven starts, finishing better than 35th once. However, it has been a different story in his last eight starts.
Check out his best finishes.
- Honda Classic: 5th
- Arnold Palmer Invitational: 5th
- Valero Texas Open: 8th
That stretch also includes a pair of top 25 finishes. He missed the cut in his last start, but I feel good about his chances in the PGA Championship.
Before winning the U.S. Open, Woodland had two strong chances to win the PGA Championship. He finished sixth in 2018 and eighth in 2019.
There’s no way I could pass up Woodland at (+12500). The top golf betting sites made a mistake with this price. It wouldn’t surprise me if there was an adjustment in the coming days. Make sure you place your bet as soon as possible.
Best PGA Championship Betting Picks
Will one of the top contenders win the 2022 PGA Championship? We’ve seen it many times, and it could very well happen again.
Scottie Scheffler (+1200)
Scottie Scheffler enters the PGA Championship with a chance to become the first golfer since Jordan Spieth to win the first two majors in the season. That’s not an easy feat, but do you want to go against the No. 1 golfer?
Scheffler has been incredible this season. He has four wins and a pair of second-place finishes. Scheffler’s four wins came in a stretch of six starts, including the 2022 Masters.
This is the first year we’ve seen Scheffler consistently compete for wins. However, he has been strong in both of his PGA Championship starts.
- 2020: 4th
- 2021: 8th
The 2020 PGA Championship was only his fifth major start. He moved up the leaderboard after shooting five-under in the third round. Ultimately, Scheffler failed to mount a final-round charge. It was a similar story in 2021.
Scheffler was able to score top 10 finishes when his game wasn’t at its peak. He showed us how well he can play in majors at Augusta National. If he recaptures that glory, the field could be in trouble.
Are you willing to bet against him?
Collin Morikawa (+1800)
Collin Morikawa has quietly been one of the best golfers on the PGA Tour. He opened the 2021-22 season with five finishes of seventh or better, including a pair of second-place finishes. He only has one top 25 in his last four starts, but it was a fifth-place finish in the Masters.
The 25-year-old doesn’t have much experience in majors, but he has taken advantage of his opportunities. Morikawa became a household name with his performance in the 2020 PGA Championship.
- First Round: 69 (-1)
- Second Round: 69 (-1)
- Third Round: 65 (-5)
- Fourth Round: 64 (-6)
He was six shots back after the second round but moved up the leaderboard with an impressive showing on the weekend. Morikawa seized command with an iconic shot on the 16th hole.
Morikawa returned with a strong performance in the 2021 PGA Championship. He scored a top 10 finish after shooting the fourth-lowest score in the final round. Will his PGA Championship success continue?
He is riding a streak of four straight top 10 finishes in majors. Morikawa should have no problem extending that streak while competing for the win.
2022 PGA Championship DFS Picks and Lineup
Bettors love their DFS lineup for any PGA Tour event, but the intensity picks up with a major. Let’s see who leads my top DFS lineup for the 2022 PGA Championship.
Top Picks for the PGA Championship
- Dustin Johnson ($9,500)
- Brooks Koepka ($9,000)
- Shane Lowry ($8,700)
Dustin Johnson has two major championships to his name, but he has had many opportunities. He’s looking for his first PGA Championship victory, and it could come at Southern Hills.
Johnson missed the cut in last year’s PGA Championship, but that came on the heels of back-to-back second-place finishes. He has six top 10 finishes in the PGA Championship and should add another one this week.
We know Brooks Koepka shines in major championships. Koepka has been hard to beat in the PGA Championship in his career.
- 2015: 5th
- 2016: 4th
- 2018: 1st
- 2019: 1st
- 2021: 2nd
He went toe-to-toe with Tiger Woods in the 2018 PGA Championship, then went wire-to-wire in 2019. It’d be a big surprise if Koepka wasn’t a top contender.
Shane Lowry is knocking on the door of his first PGA Tour victory since the 2019 Open Championship. He has five straight finishes of 13th or better, including three top-three finishes.
Lowry has finished top 10 in two of the last three PGA Championships. He has been flying under the radar, but I wouldn’t count him out. I’m expecting another top 15 finish.
2022 PGA Championship Full DFS Lineup
- Dustin Johnson ($9,500)
- Brooks Koepka ($9,000)
- Shane Lowry ($8,700)
- Tony Finau ($7,900)
- Adam Scott ($7,700)
- Justin Rose ($7,200)
Tony Finau has to be among the best active golfers without a major championship. Finau has come close many times but can’t close the deal.
Finau has three top 10 finishes in the PGA Championship. He finished fourth in the 2020 PGA Championship before dropping to eighth in 2021. He might not pick up his first major championship, but we should see a strong finish.
Adam Scott only has one PGA Tour victory in the last six years, but he has a pair of top-five finishes this season. Scott nearly picked up his second major championship in the 2018 and 2019 PGA Championships.
- 2018: 3rd
- 2019: 8th
Scott hasn’t finished top 10 in a major since the 2019 U.S. Open. He finished 12th in the 2007 PGA Championship.
Can Justin Rose win his second major championship? He has five top-five finishes since winning the 2013 U.S. Open, but he hasn’t been able to score a victory. Perhaps that’ll change at Southern Hills.
He has five top 10 finishes in the PGA Championship, including 2020 and 2021. Rose finished 12th in the 2007 PGA Championship at Southern Hills.
Predicting Who Wins the 2022 PGA Championship
There are many strong contenders for the 2022 PGA Championship, and I wouldn’t fault you for wagering on a few players. Saying that, I’m taking Collin Morikawa to capture his third career major championship.
Morikawa continues to play well in 2022. That aligns with his streak of top 10s in majors. There are too many things in his favor not to pick him to win the 2022 PGA Championship.
The 2022 PGA Championship will begin on Thursday, May 19 on ESPN. CBS will pick up the coverage for the third and fourth round. Feel free to check out our golf betting tips before wagering on the PGA Championship.
