Predictions and Picks for A-League Games on Saturday, April 9 (2022)

The Melbourne Derby headlines Saturday’s A-League schedule. You can find my Melbourne Victory vs. Melbourne City prediction below, along with all of my other A-League predictions for Saturday, April 9.
Naturally, all eyes will be on the Melbourn Derby this weekend. But there are a further three matchups to look forward to on Saturday. Here is the fixtures list in full.
- Western United vs. Wellington Phoenix
- Western Sydney Wanderers vs. Brisbane Roar
- Melbourne Victory vs. Melbourne City
- Central Coast Mariners vs. Sydney FC
Are you ready for Saturday’s A-League predictions and picks? Let’s kick things off with my Western United vs. Wellington Phoenix prediction and work our way through the rest.
Western United to Beat Wellington Phoenix
If anyone is going to catch Melbourne City, then it’s Western United. Although second-place United sits eight points behind first-place City on the A-League ladder, United has three games in hand.
John Aloisi’s men have only lost four of their 20 games this season, picking up 11 wins and five draws along the way. They also boast the second-best defensive record in the competition, having conceded just 22 goals.
- Jamie Young, Western United – 8 (40.0%)
- Ivan Kelava, Melbourne Victory – 5 (27.8%)
- Mark Birighitti, Central Coast Mariners – 5 (27.8%)
Meanwhile, Wellington heads into Saturday’s clash on the back of two HEAVY losses. The Nix were thrashed 6-0 by Melbourne City before suffering a 5-0 defeat to Central Coast on Tuesday, meaning they have lost four of their past six games.
United has suffered a solitary defeat in 13 games. This weekend, Aloisi’s men look set to extend their 11-point lead over off-form Wellington.
Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane Roar to Draw
Eleventh-place Western Sydney and tenth-place Brisbane Roar are locked on 20 points. That tells you everything you need to know about their struggles this year.
With only a handful of regular-season games remaining, Western Sydney and Brisbane find themselves eight points outside the top six. It goes without saying that both sides need to win on Saturday to keep their finals series dreams alive.
All the signs point towards a draw here. Neither team can afford to lose this clash, meaning both teams will be focused on avoiding defeat.
Melbourne City to Beat Melbourne Victory
As I already mentioned, City hammered Wellington 6-0 last weekend. The defending champions followed up that thrashing by dispatching Sydney FC 4-0 on Wednesday. Consequently, they head into the Melbourne Derby on an 11-game unbeaten streak.
Thanks largely to the goals of Jamie Maclaren and Mathew Leckie, Patrick Kisnorbo’s boys are the A-League’s top scorers by some distance. They have netted a whopping 53 goals in 23 games, meaning they average 2.3 goals per game this season.
- Melbourne City Wins: 3
- Melbourne Victory Wins: 1
- Draws: 6
As you can see, Victory has managed to win just one of the previous ten Melbourne Derby showdowns. Although the Boys in Blue are enjoying a lengthy unbeaten run of their own, they still find themselves 15 points shy of City in the standings.
Victory boasts the best defensive record in the comp, but City’s offensive record is on another level. I’m confident that Kisnorbo’s boys will extend their winning streak to five games on Saturday.
Central Coast Mariners to Beat Sydney FC
Across the past ten rounds, only three teams have picked up more points than Central Coast. All of a sudden, the Mariners find themselves two points outside the top six.
By contrast, Sydney FC has picked up a single win across the past four rounds. Following Wednesday’s 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Melbourne City, the Sky Blues have a record of W7-D7-L8. That record highlights their inconsistency.
The Mariners will leapfrog Sydney FC if they claim all three points on Saturday. Given that incentive, I expect Nick Montgomery’s men to enjoy another big win in front of their passionate home fans.
Best A-League Bets for Saturday, April 9
I hope that you enjoyed my A-League predictions for Saturday. If you did, then you will be pleased to learn that I’m not finished just yet. Why not stick around for my A-League picks?
The prices below are courtesy of Betway. If you’re looking for competitive A-League odds on a consistent basis, look no further than Betway’s sportsbook.
Wellington is coming off damaging defeats to Melbourne City (6-0) and Central Coast (5-0). Given that Western United has suffered a solitary defeat in the past 13 games, odds of 1.61 for United to beat Wellington are definitely worth taking advantage of.
The BTTS wager is my pick for Western Sydney Wanderers vs. Brisbane Roar. Why? Because both teams have scored in four of the Wanderers’ previous five outings.
All of Central Coast’s previous four games have dished up at least three goals. The Mariners have also scored over 2.5 goals in three of their last four outings, so another high-scoring encounter is on the cards.
