Predictions and Picks for the 2022 Memorial Tournament

| May 31, 2022 5:46 am PDT

The Charles Schwab Challenge didn’t work out for my top picks, but the tournament itself featured an exciting finish. Sam Burns overcame a seven-shot deficit to defeat Scottie Scheffler in a playoff.

The PGA Tour will head to Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, OH for the Memorial Tournament. Muirfield Village has hosted the tournament since its inception in 1976.

We don’t think of the Memorial Tournament as a big event, but who wouldn’t want to win Jack Nicklaus’ tournament? There’d be plenty of bragging rights for the winner.

Best Memorial Tournament Betting Sites

These sites have done a great job releasing odds early in the week. Everyone wants to wager on the winner of the Memorial Tournament, but these sites give you a plethora of props. I’ll discuss my favorite later, but they include finishing position and first-round leader.

The best way to approach betting on the Memorial Tournament is to visit the site early. That way, you have time if there’s an issue with your wager.

Thankfully, we don’t often see issues. Bettors should always use one of these sites to maximize their winnings.

2022 Memorial Tournament Betting Odds

Jon Rahm+950
Rory McIlroy+1100
Patrick Cantlay+1600
Collin Morikawa+1800
Cameron Smith+2200
Jordan Spieth+2200
Viktor Hovland+2200
Will Zalatoris+2200
Xander Schauffele+2200
Matthew Fitzpatrick+2500

Jon Rahm opens as the favorite to win the Memorial Tournament. Rahm won the 2020 Memorial Tournament and was on his way to defending his title. Unfortunately, he had to withdraw after testing positive for COVID-19.

The betting odds show that Rory McIlroy is the only player within striking distance. McIlroy has three top 10 finishes at Muirfield Village, but he hasn’t finished top 15 since 2018.

There is a cluster of golfers at (+2200). There are a few intriguing golfers in that group, but I’m highlighting Will Zalatoris.

Zalatoris missed the cut last week after losing the PGA Championship in a playoff. How will he perform in the Memorial Tournament?

Best Memorial Tournament Betting Picks

Jordan Spieth had a solid performance in the Charles Schwab Challenge, finishing in a tie for seventh. Let’s see if my top picks for the Memorial Tournament can compete for the win.

Patrick Cantlay (+1600)

Patrick Cantlay entered the 2021-22 season with a ton of momentum. He won the FedEx Cup last season after winning the final two tournaments. This season, he picked up where he left off.

Cantlay has five top-five finishes in 11 starts, including a victory in the Zurich Classic. He had a rough performance in the PGA Championship, but he should bounce back in the Memorial Tournament.

He’ll make his sixth start at Muirfield Village. The course has treated him well in his PGA Tour career.

  • 2017: E (35th)
  • 2018: -14 (4th)
  • 2019: -19 (1st)
  • 2020: +4 (32nd)
  • 2021: -13 (1st)

Cantlay had eight birdies and zero bogeys in the final round of the 2019 Memorial Tournament. Someone had to take advantage of Jon Rahm’s withdrawal in last year’s tournament. It wasn’t a great final round, but he defeated Collin Morikawa in a playoff.

The Zurich Classic was a team event, so we haven’t seen him win an individual event since the 2021 Tour Championship. He has an excellent chance to end that streak.

Xander Schauffele (+2200)

It’s hard to believe Xander Schauffele hasn’t won an individual PGA Tour tournament since 2019. He won the Gold Medal in the 2020 Olympics and the 2022 Zurich Classic with Patrick Cantlay.

We haven’t quite seen Schauffele in contention for wins, but he has shown consistency.

  • 13 starts
  • 1 win
  • 3 top-five finishes
  • 8 top 15 finishes

Schauffele missed the cut in THE PLAYERS Championship and Masters. Aside from those tournaments, he has finished 13th or better in six straight starts.

That lines up with his numbers in the Memorial Tournament. He missed the cut in his first start, but he has three straight finishes between 11th and 14th. Schauffele was never in the 2020 tournament after shooting six-over in the first round.

We haven’t seen great numbers at Muirfield Village, but the consistency gives me confidence. Schauffele is playing too well not to compete for wins. It’s only a matter of time before that changes.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Schauffele picked up his second victory of the season.

Value Picks for the Memorial Tournament

Unfortunately, neither of my value picks for the Charles Schwab Challenge were in contention. Will my fortunes change for the Memorial Tournament?

Patrick Reed (+5000)

Patrick Reed is coming off one of his best performances of the season. He was in contention after opening the Charles Schwab Challenge with a pair of four-under rounds. Ultimately, he dropped back after shooting three over on the weekend.

Still, it was great to see him in contention. This marked his first top 25 finish since the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.

Could that performance start a run for Reed? His Muirfield Village numbers suggest we’ll see him in contention.

  • 2016: -12 (8th)
  • 2020: E (10th)
  • 2021: -8 (5th)

The biggest issue with Reed in last year’s tournament was his lack of a standout round. Reed played consistent golf, shooting 69 and 71 in his four rounds. However, that left him five shots behind Patrick Cantlay.

A poor second round left him scrambling in the 2020 Memorial Tournament.

Reed will need to show us he can compete on the weekend. Last week’s performance proved he can compete for wins. Can he pull it off as a (+5000) longshot?

Si Woo Kim (+7500)

Si Woo Kim has had a Xander Schauffele-like season. We haven’t seen him compete for wins, but the consistency was there. Now, I made sure to mention that in the past tense because Kim has struggled lately.

Kim had four top 15 finishes in his first nine starts. He only has one top 25 finish in his last ten starts. We haven’t seen much from him lately, but Muirfield Village could represent a bounce-back opportunity.

This tournament didn’t bring him much success, but he turned the corner in 2021.

  • First Round: 73 (+1)
  • Second Round: 70 (-2)
  • Third Round: 68 (-4)
  • Fourth Round: 72 (E)

That might not seem like a great performance, but Kim scored his first top 10 finish in the Memorial Tournament. He showed fight, overcoming a rough first round to finish ninth.

Kim needs to fight back from this rough patch in his season. He enters the Memorial Tournament as a long shot, but I believe he could contend for his fourth PGA Tour victory.

2022 Memorial Tournament: Best Props

Unfortunately, my props for the Charles Schwab Challenge failed to hit. Hopefully, we’ll have more success in the Memorial Tournament.

Jordan Spieth to Finish Top 10 (+250)

Jordan Spieth has found his footing this season. He had a rough performance in the PGA Championship, but that’s the only time he finished worse than seventh in his last four starts.

Spieth heads to Muirfield Village aiming for his first victory in the Memorial Tournament. He only has two top 10 finishes in nine starts, but this recent stretch gives me confidence in him scoring a top 10 finish.

He missed the cut in 2018, but that’s his only non-top 20 finish at Muirfield Village in the last five starts.

I love the value for Spieth scoring a top 10 finish in the Memorial Tournament. Can he score his fourth in the last five tournaments?

Billy Horschel to Finish Top 20 (+220)

Billy Horschel’s 2021-22 season has been all over the place. He has three finishes of sixth or better, but his last six starts consist of four finishes outside the top 40. He is coming off his first missed cut of the season.

It’ll be tough for Horschel to contend for the win, but he presents excellent value for a top 20 finish. Check out his best finishes in eight starts.

  • 2014: -6 (8th)
  • 2015: -11 (10th)
  • 2019: -9 (9th)
  • 2020: +1 (13th)

The first round has been holding him back. Horschel has never had a first-round in the 60s at Muirfield Village. A great start would give him a strong chance to score a top 20 finish.

Predicting Who Wins the 2022 Memorial Tournament

My Pick: Patrick Cantlay (+1600)Bet on Golf at BetOnline

The odds might not reflect it, but Patrick Cantlay seems like the top golfer for the Memorial Tournament. He has won the tournament in two of the last three years.

Then, you factor in his success this season. Cantlay had a rough performance in the PGA Championship, but he had a week to rest and look ahead to Muirfield Village. That puts him in a good position to score the victory.
