Predictions and Picks for the 2022 Scottish Open

| July 5, 2022 6:13 am PDT

Last week’s John Deere Classic didn’t feature any heavy hitters. Honestly, there wasn’t much excitement as J.T. Poston went wire-to-wire, scoring a three-shot victory. I expect a much more competitive tournament with the 2022 Scottish Open.

This will be the first time the Scottish Open is a PGA Tour event. It has been around since 1972 but on the European Tour. It’ll serve as a tune-up for the Open Championship.

Best Scottish Open Betting Sites

There’s no doubt we’ll see more betting interest for the Scottish Open. We’ll have 14 of the top 15 players in the World Golf Rankings in the field. Therefore, it’s crucial to examine the go-to sites for making your golf predictions.

Typically, I look for the site with the best props. Everyone will release odds for the winner, but which site takes it a step further? That commitment to golf coverage gives me more faith in that particular site.

2022 Scottish Open Betting Odds

Jon Rahm+1200
Justin Thomas+1200
Scottie Scheffler+1200
Matthew Fitzpatrick+2000
Xander Schauffele+2000
Patrick Cantlay+2200
Collin Morikawa+2500
Sam Burns+2600
Cameron Smith+2800
Jordan Spieth+2800

Rory McIlroy isn’t competing in the 2022 Scottish Open, but every other top-tier player will be in the field. Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, and Scottie Scheffler headline the star-studded field.

The three major champions in 2022 make up the top four spots for the Scottish Open odds. Thomas, Scheffler, and Matthew Fitzpatrick aim for a big performance in preparation for their second major championship of the year.

Because this is a new event on the PGA Tour, we don’t have a past winner among the favorites. Justin Rose opens at (+6000), as he won the 2014 Scottish Open.

There are plenty of options for your Scottish Open prediction. Who are you picking to win the tournament?

Best Scottish Open Betting Picks

A poor first-round left Sahith Theegala behind in last week’s John Deere Classic. He likely competes for the win without the poor start.

Who are the top contenders in the Scottish Open?

Justin Thomas (+1200)

Justin Thomas has been a model of consistency throughout the season. A missed cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge is the only time he didn’t finish inside the top 40 this season.

Somehow, Thomas went a year without winning a PGA Tour event, but that ended with a big comeback in the PGA Championship. A few weeks later, he finished third in the RBC Canadian Open.

The Renaissance Club will host the Scottish Open for the fourth straight year. Few players have experience at the course, but Thomas has succeeded in his two starts.

  • 2019: -18 (9th)
  • 2021: -15 (8th)

We’ve seen Thomas excel almost everywhere this season. He’ll head to the Renaissance Club with more experience than most golfers. He should be a popular pick on the golf gambling apps.

The third round has been the issue in his two Scottish Open starts. He shot one under in each start, which won’t cut it when the winning score is close to 20-under.

Still, my top Scottish Open picks have Thomas as a top contender.

Matthew Fitzpatrick (+2000)

Matthew Fitzpatrick long had success on the European Tour, but he couldn’t get over the hump on the PGA Tour. That ended with his performance in the U.S. Open.

Fitzpatrick battled Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler in the final round. Zalatoris missed a birdie putt on the final hole, giving Fitzpatrick his first career PGA Tour victory. The Scottish Open will be his first start since the U.S. Open.

This win has been a long time coming. Including the U.S. Open, Fitzpatrick has finished 14th or better in 10 of his last 13 starts. That should be enough to qualify for your Scottish Open picks.

Like Justin Thomas, Fitzpatrick has experience at the Renaissance Club. He finished 14th in 2019 but wasn’t a factor in 2020. Fitzpatrick nearly won last year’s event, losing in a playoff to Min Woo Lee.

I expect another strong performance from Fitzpatrick in the Scottish Open. He is playing too well not to have another great finish. Will he top your golf predictions?

Value Picks for the Scottish Open

I had Scott Stallings for (+3000) at the John Deere Classic. He made a run at the victory but finished three shots back in third.

Will we see a surprise contender in the 2022 Scottish Open?

Jordan Spieth (+2800)

Jordan Spieth’s 2021-22 season has been all over the place. He hasn’t finished inside the top 30 in the majors, but other tournaments have brought him success. Spieth has a trio of top-three finishes, including winning the RBC Heritage.

It wasn’t long ago that he had a four tournament stretch with three finishes of seventh or better. However, he enters the Scottish Open with three straight finishes outside the top 15.

This marks his first start in the Scottish Open. How does he fit into my Scottish Open prediction? Spieth has been a consistent contender in the Open Championship.

The Renaissance Club offers a similar layout to links golf. That bodes well for Spieth as that fits his playstyle. He has three top-five finishes in the Open Championship, including a second-place finish in last year’s tournament.

We typically see Spieth’s odds around (+2000). I feel much more confident including him in my free Scottish Open picks because of his (+2800) odds. Can he score his second victory of the season?

Tyrrell Hatton (+7000)

Tyrell Hatton has had a decent season. He hasn’t been terrible but hasn’t competed for wins. He has six finishes between ninth and 26th. Hatton scored a second-place finish in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Including the DP World Tour, Hatton enters the Scottish Open with three straight finishes outside the top 50. Will the Scottish Open change his fortunes?

Hatton didn’t play in the 2020 Scottish Open, but he had a solid performance in the 2019 and 2021 tournaments.

  • 2019: -17 (14th)
  • 2021: -11 (18th)

Those performances are in line with his 2021-22 numbers. We’re seeing good scores from Hatton, but those finishes won’t help bettors. Hopefully, he can take it a step further in this year’s tournament.

Ultimately, I believe we’ll see him improve upon his 2021-22 numbers. Hatton has more experience at the Renaissance Club than most players in the field. You can do far worse for a player with (+7000) odds.

It’ll be interesting to see if he can overcome a strong field.

2022 Scottish Open Prop Bets

We came so close to sweeping my prop bets for the John Deere Classic, but Ryan Moore fell a few spots short of a top 20 finish.

Check out the top prop bets for the 2022 Scottish Open.

Collin Morikawa to Finish Top 10 (+300)

The Scottish Open marks Collin Morikawa’s first start since the U.S. Open. It was a tough blow for Morikawa, as he shot a 77 in the third round after taking the lead into the weekend. Still, he recovered to finish fifth.

Morikawa was a non-factor in last year’s Scottish Open, but this pick stems from last year’s Open Championship.

  • First Round: 67 (-3)
  • Second Round: 64 (-6)
  • Third Round: 68 (-2)
  • Fourth Round: 66 (-4)

A final round 66 earned him the 2021 Open Championship title. His success in that tournament should carry over to the Scottish Open.

Lucas Herbert to Finish Top 20 (+300)

Lucas Herbert isn’t a popular name on the PGA Tour, but we’ve seen him succeed this season. He has three finishes of 13th or better, including a victory in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Herbert makes my Scottish Open picks for his performances at the Renaissance Club in the last two years.

  • 2020: -9 (4th)
  • 2021: -17 (4th)

The 2020 Scottish Open was a brutal defeat for Herbert. He lost by two shots despite shooting an eight-over, 79 in the third round. A 76 would’ve won the tournament. Can he earn redemption in this year’s Scottish Open?

Predicting Who Wins the 2022 Scottish Open

My Pick: Justin Thomas (+1200)Bet on Golf at BetOnline

My Scottish Open pick was a toss-up between Justin Thomas and Matthew Fitzpatrick. Neither player has been great in the Open Championship, but I’m giving Thomas a slight edge.

Thomas has been one of the top golfers this season. He’ll have plenty of motivation to score a strong finish in preparation for the Open Championship. Thomas needs to put a rough U.S. Open performance behind him.

We’ll see earlier start times for the Scottish Open, so make sure you place your bets early. You can do so by visiting the online golf betting sites.
