Predictions and Picks for the 2022 Open Championship

| July 12, 2022 10:52 am PDT

The PGA Tour will have its final major of 2022 this week as golf heads to one of the most historic courses. St. Andrews will host the 150th Open Championship. The Old Course at St. Andrews is arguably the most famous course in the world.

Tiger Woods returns for his third PGA Tour start of the season. Woods had this tournament circled on his calendar as a two-time winner at St. Andrews. Will he be in your top golf picks?

Let’s see how my Open Championship picks view the top contenders and sleepers.

2022 Open Championship Betting Odds

Rory McIlroy+1000
Jon Rahm+1600
Jordan Spieth+1600
Xander Schauffele+1600
Scottie Scheffler+1800
Matthew Fitzpatrick+2000
Will Zalatoris+2000
Cameron Smith+2200
Justin Thomas+2200
Shane Lowry+2200

Rory McIlroy opens as the favorite to win a PGA Tour tournament. We’ve heard that statement many times throughout the 2021-22 season. McIlroy has been strong this season, but he’s still looking for his first major victory since 2014.

Xander Schauffele enters the 2022 Open Championship as the hottest player in golf. He has won three straight starts and doesn’t have a finish worse than 18th since the Masters.

Scottie Scheffler, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Justin Thomas aim to become the first player since Brooks Koepka (2018) to win multiple majors in the same year. Which golfer has the best chance to score the victory?

Best Open Championship Betting Picks

Matthew Fitzpatrick had a strong performance as one of my top golf picks from last week. Let’s see which players will battle for the 2022 Open Championship.

Rory McIlroy (+1000)

Rory McIlroy has been the golfer to beat this season. He only has two victories, but we’ve seen much consistency. McIlroy has finished top 20 in eight straight starts. He also hasn’t finished worse than eighth in a major in 2022.

Twelve years ago, McIlroy went to St. Andrews as a 21-year-old looking for his second career PGA Tour victory. He impressed everyone with an amazing first round.

He was in a strong position to contend for the win. Unfortunately, that ended after shooting an eight-over, 80 in the second round. McIlroy finished third, eight shots behind winner Louis Oosthuizen.

The Open Championship brought him success. He won the 2014 event at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. That was the start of four straight top-five finishes in the Open Championship. However, we haven’t seen the same lately.

McIlroy enters the 2022 Open Championship looking for his first finish better than 45th since 2018.

Still, will that stop you from including him in your top Open Championship picks? McIlroy should be in contention for his first major win since 2014.

Jordan Spieth (+1600)

Jordan Spieth ended a rough patch with a 10th-place finish in the Scottish Open. That’s significant for his Open Championship hopes because the Scottish Open featured a course similar to St. Andrews.

Before that, Spieth finished 18th or worse in four of his last five starts. Spieth hasn’t finished top 30 in a major in 2022, but the Open Championship should yield his best result. Check out his best results in the Open Championship.

  • 2015: -14 (4th)
  • 2017: -12 (1st)
  • 2018: -4 (9th)
  • 2021: -13 (2nd)

Spieth finished fourth in his first start at St. Andrews. Two years later, he scored his first victory in the Open Championship. Spieth led wire-to-wire, defeating Matt Kuchar by three shots.

He nearly tracked down Collin Morikawa in last year’s tournament before losing by two shots. Still, we’ve seen multiple strong performances in the Open Championship. The odds suggest we’ll see another.

Will your Open Championship prediction include Spieth? It’ll be interesting to see if he can shake his 2022 major struggles.

Value Picks for the Open Championship

We haven’t seen an upset in a major in 2022, but it’s only a matter of time before a surprise contender pulls off the victory.

Take a look at my top value picks for the 2022 Open Championship.

Tony Finau (+5000)

Tony Finau didn’t have a great start to the 2021-22 season, but we’ve seen him turn it around lately. Finau enters the Open Championship with three finishes of 13th or better in his last four starts. Will momentum propel him to his first major title?

Finau has come close in majors, scoring ten top 10 finishes in 25 starts, but that first major victory has eluded him. My Open Championship prediction believes it could happen this week.

Check out his Open Championship finishes in the last three tournaments.

  • 2018: -4 (9th)
  • 2019: -7 (3rd)
  • 2021: -5 (15th)

Finau has never had a terrible finish in the Open Championship. He finished 18th and 27th in his first two starts. I have a feeling we’ll see a strong performance in his first St. Andrews start.

He’s due for a strong performance in a major. Going back to last year, he has one finish better than 30th in his previous five major starts. It’s only a matter of time before he contends for the win.

Matt Kuchar (+25000)

Matt Kuchar hasn’t won a PGA Tour event in three years, but we’ve seen him in contention this season. Kuchar scored back-to-back top-three finishes in early April. More recently, he finished 12th in the AT&T Byron Nelson.

Like Tony Finau, Kuchar has never won a major. You can argue that Kuchar is the best golfer without a major championship. Can he take his name off that list this week?

Kuchar has three top 10 finishes in the Open Championship, including a second-place finish in 2017.

We know Jordan Spieth went wire-to-wire in the 2017 Open Championship, but Kuchar never finished a round below second. That strong performance is something you won’t find with other golfers at (+25000).

Your golf predictions can do much worse for a golfer in this price range. I have no problem taking a shot on Kuchar at (+25000).

We’ve seen him in contention for victories as recently as three months ago. It wouldn’t surprise me if he had another strong performance.

2022 Open Championship Prop Bets

My prop bets from last week’s Scottish Open didn’t come close to hitting. Hopefully, we have a strong performance for the Open Championship.

Brooks Koepka to Finish Top 10 (+350)

Brooks Koepka has been a popular pick for my golf predictions in majors,  but he hasn’t finished better than 50th. I’m not taking a chance on him winning, but he could score a top 10 finish.

Koepka had a solid performance in the last LIV Golf Tournament before a rough final round. He’s coming off a ninth-place finish in the JP McManus Pro-Am. We’ve seen a few strong performances in the Open Championship.

He finished 10th at St. Andrews in 2015. Since then, he has three finishes of sixth or better in four Open Championship starts. Will you use the best betting apps for golf to wager on Koepka?

Louis Oosthuizen to Finish Top 20 (+145)

Louis Oosthuizen was one of the top major players last season, scoring three top-three finishes. Unfortunately, he failed to capture a victory, but there was hope it’d carry over to 2022.

Oosthuizen hasn’t come close to competing in a major, but I’m backing him for his past results at St. Andrews.

  • 2010: -16 (1st)
  • 2015: -15 (2nd)

He cruised to a dominant seven-shot victory in the 2010 Open Championship. He nearly became a two-time winner at St. Andrews before losing in a playoff to Zach Johnson.

Oosthuizen hasn’t been great this season, but his St Andrews success should be enough for a top 20 finish.

Predicting Who Wins the 2022 Open Championship

My Pick: Rory McIlroy (+1000)Bet on Golf at Bovada

My free Open Championship pick has Rory McIlroy capturing his first major victory since 2014. McIlroy has been the best golfer throughout the season. His argument strengths with his major performances.

It’s only a matter of time before McIlroy wins a major. If not for the terrible second round, he would’ve been a top contender at St. Andrews in 2010. I expect a big performance in this year’s event.

Peacock, USA Network, and NBC have coverage of the Open Championship. Check out the top golf betting sites to place your bets.
