Predictions and Picks for the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge

| May 24, 2022 6:10 am PDT

Well, last week’s PGA Tour event featured a wild round in the PGA Championship. Mito Pereira’s double-bogey on the final hole led to a playoff between Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris. Thomas went on to win his second major.

We might not have the hype of a major, but the PGA Tour should have more action with the Charles Schwab Challenge. Colonial Country Club has hosted the event since 1946. It’s the longest event at one venue among non-majors.

Here are my top betting picks for the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge.

Best Charles Schwab Challenge Betting Sites

The best golf betting sites have done an excellent job releasing odds for PGA Tour events in the 2021-22 season. They had odds for the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge available less than 24 hours after the conclusion of the PGA Championship.

These sites allow you to wager on any golfer of your choice. Will you take one of the favorites or opt for a long shot? Either way, make sure you sign up ahead of the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge.

We need to odds to evaluate the favorites. Let’s check them out.

2022 Charles Schwab Challenge Betting Odds

Scottie Scheffler+1100
Jordan Spieth+1200
Justin Thomas+1200
Collin Morikawa+1600
Viktor Hovland+2000
Will Zalatoris+2000
Max Homa+2800
Sam Burns+2800
Abraham Ancer+3300
Daniel Berger+3300

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler opens as the favorite for the Charles Schwab Challenge. Scheffler has four victories this season, but he’s coming off a missed cut in the PGA Championship.

Jordan Spieth is one of the top contenders thanks to his success at Colonial Country Club. He has one victory in this event, but it could easily be more.

How will Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris look after battling in a playoff in the PGA Championship?

Best Charles Schwab Challenge Betting Picks

Justin Thomas pulled off the PGA Championship as one of the pre-tournament favorites. Who can replicate his performance in the Charles Schwab Challenge?

Jordan Spieth (+1200)

Jordan Spieth came into last week’s PGA Championship looking to complete the career grand slam. It never came to fruition, as he finished outside the top 30. However, we’ve seen him in contention multiple times this season.

Spieth has three top-two finishes, including a victory in the RBC Heritage. We should see him in contention for his third top-five finish in his last four starts.

Colonial Country Club has been very good to Spieth in his career. Check out his top finishes at the course.

  • 2013: -10 (7th)
  • 2015: -11 (2nd)
  • 2016: -17 (1st)
  • 2017: -9 (2nd)
  • 2019: -5 (8th)
  • 2020: -11 (10th)
  • 2021: -10 (2nd)

Spieth has one finish outside the top 15 in nine starts in the Charles Schwab Challenge. That stretch includes four top-two finishes.

He should’ve added to his win total last season. He led going into the final round but shot three over. I have a strong feeling we’ll see him in contention for another victory at Colonial Country Club.

I wouldn’t recommend betting against him.

Abraham Ancer (+3300)

Abraham Ancer is coming off one of his best finishes of the season. His ninth-place finish marked his second straight top 10 finish in the PGA Championship. It also marked his fourth top 15 finish of the season.

That’s likely what we’re looking at in the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge. We haven’t quite seen him in contention to win, but he looked strong at Colonial Country Club in 2020.

  • First Round: 64 (-6)
  • Second Round: 70 (E)
  • Third Round: 66 (-4)
  • Fourth Round: 70 (E)

Ancer’s second round didn’t do him any favors, but a strong third round moved him within striking distance. Ultimately, he failed to mount a charge while his competitors went low.

Last year, Ancer shook off a slow start to score another 14th-place finish. He was one-over through two rounds but shot six-under on the weekend. He’ll need to put together a complete week to win the Charles Schwab Challenge.

We know he’s capable of competing for wins. Can Ancer put it together to score his second career PGA Tour victory? Bettors would love to see him finish the job.

Value Picks for the Charles Schwab Challenge

We saw how close Mito Pereira came to winning the PGA Championship as a longshot. Let’s see which golfers can take it one step further and close the deal.

Jason Kokrak (+4000)

Jason Kokrak had a great start to the 2021-22 season. He finished outside the top 50 in his first two starts but picked up his third PGA Tour victory in the Houston Open. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen the same level of play lately.

Kokrak has had three top 20 finishes since that victory, but nothing better than 14th. There’s a good chance that changes in the Charles Schwab Challenge.

He only had one top 20 finish in his first five starts at Colonial Country Club, Kokrak scored a third-place finish in 2020, and one-upped himself last season.

  • First Round: 65 (-5)
  • Second Round: 65 (-5)
  • Third Round: 66 (-4)
  • Fourth Round: 70 (E)

It wasn’t a pretty final round, but Kokrak’s 70 earned him the 2021 Charles Schwab Challenge title. That nearly marked his second victory in the event. Kokrak shot 11-under on the weekend in 2020, finishing one shot out of a playoff.

The 2021-22 stats aren’t what you’d like to see, but his success at Colonial Country Club gives me confidence. If nothing else, you have to like his value for the tournament.

Emiliano Grillo (+20000)

Has anyone heard anything about Emiliano Grillo this season? Grillo has been a non-factor, missing the cut in nine of his 17 stats. Grillo only has one PGA Tour victory, coming in the 2015 Open.

Sometimes, you have to side with the value. That’s a big reason I’m including Grillo in my top picks, but it’s mainly because of his success in the Charles Schwab Challenge.

He wasn’t a factor in his first two starts, but we’ve seen a few impressive performances in the last four years.

  • 2018: -16 (3rd)
  • 2019: -2 (19th)
  • 2021: -6 (8th)

Grillo was in contention in 2018. He birdied four of his first seven holes in the final round but couldn’t hang with Justin Rose and Brooks Koepka. Still, it was impressive to see him compete with a pair of major champions.

He wasn’t much of a factor in 2019, but he returned with a strong performance in 2021. Grillo never mounted a charge, shooting four rounds of 68 or worse. It was enough to score a top 10 finish.

The top golf betting sites give him too much value not to pick.

2022 Charles Schwab Challenge: Best Props

Golf betting goes beyond the winner of the tournament. Check out the top betting props for the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge.

Brian Harman to Finish Top 10 (+375)

Brian Harman has been inconsistent this season, but we’ve seen him in contention to win multiple tournaments. Harman has three top 10 finishes, including two weeks ago in the Wells Fargo Championship.

Harman has nine starts at Colonial Country Club. Check out his best finishes.

  • 2015: -9 (10th)
  • 2017: -6 (7th)
  • 2021: -6 (8th)

Do you see why I like his value to score a top 10 finish? Harman has produced solid results in the Charles Schwab Challenge. He has only finished outside the top 25 once in the last seven years.

He should keep it up as he aims for his fourth top 10 finish of the season.

Gary Woodland to Finish Top 20 (+150)

Gary Woodland has been boom or bust this season. He has four top 10 finishes and eight missed cuts. Like Brian Harman, it’s hard to determine which version will show up on any given week.

We might not see the best version of Woodland at Colonial Country Club, but his past finishes should give you confidence for a top 20 finish.

He finished top 15 in his last two starts, including a ninth-place finish in the 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge. Woodland might not contend for the win, but he shouldn’t have an issue scoring a top 20 finish.

Predicting Who Wins the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge

  • Jordan Spieth

Did you expect anyone else? Jordan Spieth has been on a tear at Colonial Country Club. He has seven top 10 finishes in nine starts, including four top-two finishes.

We’ve seen him in contention lately, winning the RBC Heritage and finishing second in the AT&T Byron Nelson. Spieth won’t have the pressure of trying to complete the career grand slam at Colonial Country Club.

It’d be hard for me to consider anyone else the top betting pick for the Charles Schwab Challenge. Head over to Bovada to wager on Spieth or any golfer of your choice.
