Predictions and Best Bets for A-League Games – Saturday, April 2, 2022
Welcome to my A-League predictions and picks for Saturday, April 2. There are four A-League games taking place this Saturday, and in this post, I will be looking at each clash from a betting perspective.
Western United vs. Central Coast Mariners is the early kick-off. Wellington Phoenix vs. Melbourne City comes next, with Adelaide United vs. Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC vs. Western Sydney Wanderers capping off Saturday’s A-League fixtures.
With all of the top four teams in action – and the small matter of the Sydney Derby to look forward to – Saturday’s stacked A-League schedule is destined to dish up a ton of thrills and spills.
Let’s dive straight into my predictions for Saturday’s A-League games.
Western United to Beat Central Coast Mariners
Western United is currently enjoying a phenomenal run of just one defeat in 12 games.
Between late January and mid-March, John Aloisi’s men notched a nine-game unbeaten streak – picking up six wins and three draws in the process. A loss to Sydney FC threatened to halt their momentum, but they have since taken four points from a possible six.
Granted, the Mariners are enjoying an unbeaten run of their own at the moment. Following an eight-game winless stretch, the Coasties have collected three wins and two draws across their past five outings.
But there is no hiding from the fact that eighth-place Central Coast trails second-place Western United by 15 points. Aloisi’s men are on a totally different level right now, so I expect them to beat the Mariners.
Melbourne City to Beat Wellington Phoenix
Melbourne City heads into Saturday’s clash against Wellington Phoenix on a nine-game unbeaten streak, having secured six wins and three draws since their last loss.
When you look at the bigger picture, the defending champions have lost just three of their 21 A-League outings this season. As a result, they find themselves three points clear of Western United – and 12 points ahead of third-place Adelaide!
Patrick Kisnorbo’s boys are also the competition’s top scorers by some distance, thanks largely to the attacking exploits of the players below.
- Jamie Maclaren: 13 goals, 2 assists
- Mathew Leckie: 6 goals, 4 assists
- Florin Berenguer: 5 goals, 3 assists
- Andrew Nabbout: 4 goals, 5 assists
- Marco Tilio: 2 goals, 6 assists
Don’t get me wrong, Wellington should give the reigning champs a run for their money. The Nix have won seven of their last 11 A-League games, including each of their previous two. Still, they will struggle to avoid defeat on Saturday.
The New Zealanders remain 13 points behind City on the A-League ladder. That tells you everything you need to know about the gulf in quality between these two sides.
Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory to Draw
In all honesty, it is difficult to predict the outcome of this clash. Although third-place Adelaide and sixth-place Victory are separated by three points, Victory has three games in hand over Adelaide.
Meanwhile, the Boys in Blue have racked up four consecutive 1-1 draws. Thanks to wins over Central Coast and Macarthur, they are currently enjoying a six-game unbeaten streak. But they have failed to see off their recent opponents.
Having taken everything into consideration, the draw feels like the most probable outcome for this match. Tony Popovic’s men boast the joint-best defensive record in the league, but they can’t seem to turn draws into wins at the moment.
Sydney FC to Beat Western Sydney Wanderers
It is no secret that Sydney FC is enduring an indifferent campaign. The 2020 champions have managed to win just six of their 20 A-League games, recording seven draws and seven losses along the way.
That said, the Sky Blues have upped their game in recent weeks. Following back-to-back wins over Perth Glory and Western United, they lost to Newcastle Jets before drawing with Macarthur. That means they have lost only one of their past four outings.
Although Western Sydney beat Sydney FC 2-0 at the beginning of March, I’m backing the Sky Blues to gain their revenge on Saturday. There is no denying that Sydney FC has enough quality to get the better of the Wanderers.
My A-League Picks for Saturday, April 2
Let’s wrap things up by going over the best value A-League bets for Saturday. The odds below are taken from 10bet’s sportsbook.
Having secured 11 wins in 19 games, Western United leads Central Coast by 15 points on the A-League ladder. With that in mind, odds of 2.00 for United to beat the Mariners are definitely worth taking advantage of.
The BTTS wager appears to be the best bet for Wellington vs. Melbourne City. Although the defending champions are the top scorers, only two sides have conceded more goals this season.
Last but not least, I’m backing the Sky Blues to claim the Sydney bragging rights when the Wanderers make the short trip to Netsrata Jubilee Stadium. Steve Corica’s boys will be desperate to get their revenge over their arch-rivals.
