Portland Timbers vs. Seattle Sounders – MLS, May 9, 2021

| May 8, 2021 4:12 am PDT

Portland and Seattle will battle for the Pacific Northwest bragging rights on Sunday, May 9, as the two rivals meet for their first Cascadia Cup clash of the season.

In true Seattle style, the Sounders have made a flying start to the 2021 MLS campaign. They currently find themselves at the Western Conference summit, having claimed seven points from a possible nine so far.

At the other end of the standings, the Timbers sit second from bottom. They have already lost twice this year, with a humiliating 4-1 thrashing coming at the hands of FC Dallas last weekend.

If you’re here for my Portland Timbers vs. Seattle Sounders prediction and betting pick – keep reading.

Portland may have the home-field advantage on Sunday, but the best online sportsbooks believe that Seattle has the upper hand at the moment.

The Timbers invariably up their game when the Sounders come to town. That said, the two rivals have enjoyed contrasting fortunes during the early stages of the season – making the price for the Seattle win stand out.

Join me as I analyze the teams.

Will the Timbers Rise to the Occasion?

It is pretty obvious that Portland’s CONCACAF Champions League campaign has had a negative impact on the team’s early-season performances in MLS.

The Timbers qualified for the CCL quarter-finals with an emphatic 7-2 aggregate victory over Honduran side CD Marathon last month, only to fall to Club America in the last eight. Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Portland lost 3-1 to the Mexican giant on Wednesday.

Having suffered an uncharacteristic loss to Vancouver – another Cascadia Cup rival – on the opening weekend of the MLS season, Giovanni Savarese’s men scraped past Houston in Week 2.

But last weekend, they were completely outclassed by Dallas.

A tired-looking Timbers team saw just 40% possession and only managed to register two shots on target in Texas. Oh, and they conceded four goals!

It’s safe to say that Portland has struggled to adapt to the demands of Major League Soccer in 2021. Still, the Oregon outfit won’t need any motivation when it comes to facing Sunday’s opponent.

Can the Sounders Remain Unbeaten?

Surprise, surprise – the Sounders have already taken control of the Western Conference this year. Did you really expect anything else?

Seattle totally dominated Minnesota United in Week 1, with Raul Ruidiaz bagging a brace in a crushing 4-0 win. Brian Schmetzer’s men were held to a 1-1 draw by LAFC a fortnight ago, but they bounced back in style last weekend.

The unstoppable Ruidiaz netted his second double of the season as the Sounders beat the Galaxy 3-0. Following a blistering start to the season, the prolific Peruvian already has four goals in three games.

Brad Smith has been key to Seattle’s early-season domination, too. The Australian has chipped in with two goals and one assist from left-back, while Joao Paulo and Fredy Montero have also opened their accounts.

It goes without saying that Seattle looks set for another successful year.

My Portland vs. Seattle Prediction and Pick

  • Seattle Sounders to Win

I’m confident that Portland will turn things around and come good as the campaign unfolds. But right now, the Timbers are not in a good place – and Seattle is likely to take full advantage of that.

The Sounders have played some eye-catching soccer across their opening three games this season, scoring eight goals while conceding just once along the way.

You probably won’t be surprise to learn that the away win is my Portland Timbers vs. Seattle Sounders prediction.
