Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes Betting Preview – MLS, October 11, 2020
The Quakes’ remarkable season turnaround continued in midweek as they claimed a 3-0 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps and extended their winning streak to three games. But San Jose faces a tough test against Portland on Sunday, October 11.
The Timbers head into the weekend on the back of four straight victories, with Wednesday’s 6-3 thrashing of LA Galaxy helping the Oregon club to cement second place in the Western Conference. Seventh-place San Jose is seven points behind.

Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes Odds
San Jose (5.10) is on a roll right now, but that doesn’t seem to have affected 10bet’s odds for this game. Let’s not forget that Portland (1.60) is also enjoying an impressive winning run of their own at the moment.
Considering the Quakes’ recent form, I can see plenty of bettors getting tempted by the high odds for the draw (4.05) and the away win. But it’s important to remember the Timbers hammered San Jose 6-1 less than a month ago.
Portland has played ten games since going all the way at the MLS is Back Tournament in August, and Giovanni Savarese’s men have only suffered three defeats in that time. The Timbers struggled to get going when the regular season resumed, but they are now firmly in their groove.
The Oregon club’s winning streak started with a 6-1 humiliation of San Jose, with victories over Seattle Sounders, Vancouver Whitecaps, and LA Galaxy coming since then. Portland has averaged 3.5 goals per game across their previous four outings, keeping two clean sheets along the way.
Felipe Mora and Jeremy Ebobisse both bagged a brace as the Timbers crushed the Galaxy last time out. Ebobisse now has four goals and one assist in his last six appearances, and the 23-year-old is fast becoming one of the leading lights in MLS.
Needless to say, San Jose is likely to struggle to deal with Portland’s free-scoring forward line.
The Quakes have made a real impression over the past couple of weeks. Matias Almeyda’s men went on an eight-game winless run after the MLS is Back Tournament, but they have since won their previous three outings.
Back-to-back victories over the two LA teams, along with a win against Vancouver last time out, have steered the Californians away from the bottom of the Western Conference for now. However, it is difficult to ignore San Jose’s dreadful defensive record.
The Goonies have conceded a crazy 40 goals in 16 regular-season games this year. That’s an average of 2.5 goals per game! Sure, the team may be enjoying an upturn in form at the moment. But Almeyda’s leaky backline will be tested to the max against Portland this weekend.
Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes Pick
Portland Timbers to Win1.60
All good things must come to an end, right? San Jose has shocked everyone with a string of impressive wins lately, but I’m confident their winning streak will be ended by the Timbers on Sunday.
Portland is seemingly unstoppable right now. Savarese’s men have destroyed everything in their path in recent weeks, and the Quakes look set to become their next victim.
