Portland Timbers vs. Orlando City – MLS, Sunday, March 27, 2022
With the international break in full swing, we have just one Major League Soccer game to look forward to on Sunday, March 27. But don’t worry – it promises to be a tasty clash.
The Portland Timbers welcome Orlando City to Providence Park for the fifth time in history. Although the Lions have managed to pick up a solitary victory in Oregon since 2015, they will be confident of upsetting the MLS odds after making a strong start to the season.
If you’re planning to bet on Major League Soccer’s only clash this Sunday, you will be pleased to learn that I provide my Portland Timbers vs. Orlando City prediction below – along with a free pick.
Portland Timbers vs. Orlando City Betting Odds
Betway views Portland (1.85) as the favorite to triumph on Sunday. It is no surprise that all the best soccer betting sites agree with Betway’s viewpoint.
Still, you would be a fool to write off Orlando (3.80) altogether. The Lions are two points better off than Portland, meaning they will fancy their chances of snatching a draw (3.60) at the least.
Portland Timbers vs. Orlando City Head-to-Head
- Portland Timbers Wins: 2
- Draws: 1
- Orlando City Wins: 3
Portland and Orlando have faced each other on six occasions since the Lions joined the league back in 2015. As you can see, Orlando has the upper hand in the overall H2H stats.
The Floridians have lost just two of their six meetings with Portland, securing three wins along the way. However, the Timbers have suffered only one defeat on home soil in this fixture.
Portland Timbers Team News and Analysis
The Timbers find themselves ninth in the Western Conference after recording one win, two draws, and one loss from their opening four games.
Giovanni Savarese’s men kicked off their campaign with a three-game unbeaten streak, drawing with New England and LAFC before beating Austin FC. However, they suffered their first defeat of the year last weekend.
Following last weekend’s thrashing, Portland has one of the worst defensive records in the West. In fact, only the bottom three sides have conceded more goals this season.
It is worth noting that Portland has three key players sidelined through injury at the moment. With Christhian Paredes, Eryk Williamson, and Felipe More absent, things could get worse before they get better.
Orlando City Team News and Analysis
Over in the Eastern Conference, Orlando occupies fifth place. The Lions are only three points behind first-place Philadelphia after losing just one of their first four matches.
Following a 2-0 win over CF Montreal in Week 1, Oscar Pareja’s boys registered a goalless draw with Chicago Fire. They went on to suffer a shock loss to FC Cincinnati in Week 3 but returned to winning ways last time out.
Torres has teamed up with Brazilian legend Alexandre Pato in Orlando’s forward line, making the Lions one of the most dangerous attacking teams in Major League Soccer. Let’s not forget that Pato marked his return with a goal on the opening weekend.
At the opposite end of the field, Pareja’s boys have conceded two goals in four games. Having already kept three clean sheets this season, they boast the joint-best defensive record in the entire league.
Prediction for Portland Timbers vs. Orlando City
It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Portland produced a horrible performance last time out. Not only did they concede four goals, but they also offered very little going forward.
Meanwhile, the Lions secured their third shutout victory in four games last weekend. Given Portland’s lackluster display against Dallas, Orlando will be confident of keeping another clean sheet in Oregon.
Ultimately, I can see Orlando claiming all three points on Sunday. Pareja’s boys are firing on all cylinders at both ends of the field at the moment, while the Timbers are struggling to make their mark this year.
Portland Timbers vs. Orlando City Pick
Orlando City to Win3.80
Thanks to the Floridians’ away status, the price for the Orlando win is extremely attractive here. By contrast, the odds for the Portland win are way too low to bother with. That’s why I’m backing the Lions to seal the deal on Sunday.
Torres and Pato will be licking their lips at the prospect of exploiting a backline that conceded four goals last weekend. The Lions can also call upon attackers such as Ercan Kara, Benji Michel, and Tesho Akindele if they need to.
