Portland Timbers vs. LAFC – MLS, October 18, 2020

| October 16, 2020 2:58 am PDT

Portland and LAFC have already produced two thrilling games this year. The teams drew 2-2 at the MLS is Back Tournament before LAFC trashed the Timbers 4-2 last month.

On Sunday, October 18, the two sides clash for the third time this season.

Portland currently holds a six-point lead over LAFC in the Western Conference, and Giovanni Savarese’s men will no doubt be looking for revenge. But the Los Angeles club has enjoyed a number of positive results recently.

Keep reading to see my Portland Timbers vs. LAFC prediction and betting pick.

Portland Timbers vs. LAFC Odds

Portland Timbers to Win 2.30
The Draw 3.60
LAFC to Win 2.75

As you can see, the odds gap is pretty small here. 10bet has made Portland (2.30) the favorite to win on Sunday, although the price for the LAFC win (2.75) isn’t much higher.

There is no denying that Portland has been far more consistent this year, while LAFC has been wildly unpredictable throughout 2020. Could the draw (3.60) be the way to go?

I assess both sides’ chances below.

Portland Timbers vs. LAFC Preview

Despite suffering a shock defeat to Real Salt Lake last time out, Portland remains joint-top of the Western Conference on 30 points. RSL ended an outstanding five-game winning streak for the Timbers on Wednesday, so Savarese’s men will be eager to get back on track this weekend.

The Oregon club scored a massive 17 goals across their winning run, with clean sheets coming against Seattle Sounders, Vancouver Whitecaps, and San Jose. Portland also netted six goals in a single outing against the Galaxy and scored nine goals in two games against the Quakes.

Still, all good things must come to an end, right? The Timbers’ recent loss to RSL was a huge shock, and it could not have come at a worse time. Savarese’s men will have been looking to carry their momentum into Sunday’s clash with LAFC, but they will have to start all over again.

In all honesty, it is extremely difficult to predict which version of LAFC will turn up to Providence Park this weekend. Bob Bradley’s men appeared to heading in the right direction following 3-1 victories over RSL and Seattle earlier in the month. But they lost 2-1 to struggling Vancouver on Wednesday.

The Black & Gold’s unpredictability hasn’t made life easy for MLS bettors this season. In years gone by, we had gotten used to the Los Angeles outfit winning on an almost weekly basis. But their current record of W7-D2-L7 underlines the team’s struggles this term.

Of course, the long-term injury to MVP Carlos Vela has not helped the California club’s cause. But with top-quality attacking players like Latif Blessing, Diego Rossi, and Bradley Wright-Phillips in the squad, LAFC should definitely be doing a lot better.

Portland Timbers vs. LAFC Pick

  • Portland Timbers to Win

This matchup is super tough to call. The Timbers may have only taken one point from a possible six from LAFC this season, but Portland has undoubtedly been the better team in 2020.

I wouldn’t be overly surprised if the Black & Gold extended their unbeaten streak against Portland, but I’m backing the Timbers to come out on top this time around. Savarese’s men have been ruthless in recent weeks, and I’m confident the loss to RSL was just a blip.
