Portland Timbers vs. LA Galaxy Betting Preview – MLS, October 28, 2020
When Portland hosted LA Galaxy back in August, the California club secured a 3-2 win. But when the teams met at the beginning of October, the Timbers gained their revenge with a crushing 6-3 victory.
Portland welcomes the Galaxy back to Providence Park on Wednesday, October 28, with the two sides sitting at opposite ends of the Eastern Conference. The third-place Timbers are one point off top spot, while the Galaxy is rock bottom of the table.
After assessing the bookies’ odds, I provide my Portland Timbers vs. LA Galaxy prediction and pick.
Portland Timbers vs. LA Galaxy Odds
Unsurprisingly, the leading online betting sites view Portland (1.80) as the favorite to win this one. The Timbers have a commanding 14-point lead over LA Galaxy (3.95), and that is clearly reflected in the odds for this matchup.
I assess both sides’ chances below.
Portland’s winless run was extended to three games by the Sounders last time out. But given that Giovanni Savarese’s men have picked up draws against two of the top teams in the Western Conference – Seattle and LAFC – in their previous two outings, I don’t think they need to worry too much.
Prior to losing to Real Salt Lake earlier in the month, the Timbers notched up five straight victories. A 6-3 thrashing of LA Galaxy came in the middle of that run, and the Oregon outfit also kept three clean sheets during the same period.
In fairness, Portland has the be the unluckiest team in MLS right now. Savarese’s side was on course for victories over LAFC and Seattle but ended up conceding stoppage time equalizers on both occasions.
The Timbers will be desperate to get back on track this week, and I’m sure you’ll agree that the visit of struggling LA Galaxy provides them with the perfect opportunity to return to winning ways.
The Galaxy finally ended a run of six straight defeats by edging Vancouver Whitecaps two weekends ago. But the good times didn’t last long. Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side lost 2-0 to El Trafico rival LAFC last weekend, with Giancarlo Gonzalez being shown a red card midway through the first half.
Even with a full complement, the Galaxy was always going to struggle against LAFC. But after the team was reduced to ten men, the enormity of the task became even more overwhelming. The Galaxy finished the game with just 35% possession and only managed one shot on target.
Not only are Barros Schelotto’s men the lowest scorers in the Western Conference, but they also have the third-worst defensive record in the division.
Portland Timbers vs. LA Galaxy Betting Pick
Portland Timbers to Win1.80
Portland hammered the Galaxy 6-3 just over a fortnight ago, and I’m expecting a similar scoreline this time around. The Timbers haven’t been at their best since the teams last met, but then again, neither has LA Galaxy.
It feels like Barros Schelotto is bereft of ideas, so I don’t think it will be too long before the Galaxy is searching for a new head coach.
