Portland Timbers vs. LA Galaxy – MLS, May 22, 2021
The Timbers will be hoping to build on a much-needed win over San Jose when they welcome the LA Galaxy to Providence Park on Saturday, May 22.
Portland has only managed to take six points from a possible 15 this season and currently sits ninth in the Western Conference – six points behind Greg Vanney’s men, who sit second after winning four of their five matches this year.
If you’re here for my Portland Timbers vs. LA Galaxy prediction – keep reading! After looking at the odds and assessing both teams, I also share my betting pick for Saturday’s game at the end.
Portland Timbers vs. LA Galaxy Odds
Although the Galaxy has started the season on a high, the bookmakers view Portland as the heavy favorite to win on Saturday. Needless to say, the massive price for the away win is difficult to ignore.
Granted, the Timbers have made a below-par start to the campaign. But let’s not forget that they finished 17 points clear of the Galaxy last year.
Can the Timbers Continue to Build?
Having lost three of their opening four MLS games this season, it was imperative that Portland turned a corner last weekend. Thankfully, the Oregon outfit beat San Jose 2-0.
Despite seeing just 33% possession, the Timbers were still able to record 18 shots against the Quakes. Goals from Yimmi Chara and Marvin Loria sealed the deal, while goalkeeper Logan Ketterer saved a penalty on his MLS debut.
Giovanni Savarese’s men have already played nine competitive games this year, with a run to the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals ending in heartbreak. But following their CCL departure, they can now give 100% to their domestic campaign.
If the Timbers want to start moving up the standings, they will need to start scoring more goals. Indeed, they have only netted six league goals this season, while only four teams in the West have scored fewer.
Having bagged three goals in four CCL appearances, Chara could hold the key to Portland’s chances of becoming more prolific.
Will the Galaxy Win Again?
It is no secret that the Galaxy endured a season to forget in 2020. But this time around, it feels like the team is a completely different animal altogether.
Since Vanney took over, his team has picked up four wins in five MLS games. The Sounders – who have yet to taste defeat this term – are atop the West, although the Galaxy is close behind in second place.
The five-time MLS Cup champions kicked off their campaign with back-to-back victories over Inter Miami and the Red Bulls before Seattle beat them 3-0. However, they wasted no time in returning to winning ways.
After claiming a memorable 2-1 El Trafico victory over LAFC, the Carson club sealed a 2-0 win against Austin on Saturday. Unsurprisingly, Chicharito scored AGAIN last time out.
The former Manchester United striker has netted seven goals in five matches this year, including a hat-trick against RBNY. If he can maintain his current form throughout the campaign, the Galaxy will be difficult to stop.
Timbers vs. Galaxy Pick
The Timbers produced a much-improved performance to get the better of San Jose last weekend. Still, they are likely to find it far more difficult to claim all three points when Chicharito and co. come to town.
Interestingly, the Galaxy has yet to draw a game this season. But that run can’t last forever, right?
Apart from the loss to Seattle, Vanney’s men have been almost unstoppable this year. If they can carry their momentum to Oregon, they should be able to come away with at least one point.
