Portland Timbers vs. Colorado Rapids – MLS, October 3, 2020
The Rapids haven’t beaten Portland in their previous five attempts and last claimed an away victory in this fixture all the way back in 2011.
Robin Fraser’s men have a chance to put that right on Saturday, October 3, when the two sides clash for the first time this season. But with the Timbers joint-top of the Western Conference and Colorado five points behind, it won’t be easy for the visitor.

Portland Timbers vs. Colorado Rapids Odds
Having won each of their last three games, Portland (2.05) heads into this clash as the online sportsbooks’ favorite, and rightfully so. But with three wins in their previous four outings, Colorado’s price (2.88) isn’t as high as it might have been a few weeks ago.
The strong form of both teams has made the odds relatively tight for this game, although the bookies clearly don’t think it will end in a draw (4.00).
Let’s take a closer at both sides.
After winning the MLS is Back Tournament in August, Portland struggled on their return to regular-season action. Giovanni Savarese’s men only managed to win one of their six games following their triumph in Florida, but it feels like they are finally back on track.
The Timbers ended their six-game winless run with a thumping 6-1 thrashing of San Jose Earthquakes and have since registered 1-0 victories over both Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps. Three straight wins mean the Oregon club is now level with Seattle at the top of the Western Conference – four points clear of third-place Sporting Kansas City.
Yes, the team still has some defensive issues. But with Diego Valeri (7 goals, 5 assists) and Jeremy Ebobisse (6 goals, 3 assists) keeping busy at the other end of the pitch, Portland should reach the play-offs with ease.
Reaching the play-offs probably wasn’t a realistic target for Colorado a couple of months ago. The Rapids picked up just one point from a possible nine at the MLS is Back Tournament before failing to win any of their subsequent four regular-season games.
However, three hugely impressive wins in under a fortnight have thrust Robin Fraser’s side into contention for a top-eight finish. Colorado crushed Real Salt Lake and San Jose 5-0, with a 2-0 victory over LA Galaxy coming in between.
Cole Basset, Jonathan Lewis, and Diego Rubio have each netted two goals across the past four games, with the former also grabbing two assists along the way. It is certainly an exciting time to be a Rapids supporter.
Prediction and Pick
Having taken everything into consideration, the price for the draw seems too good to miss here. Both sides are in strong form, so this is destined to be a tight game.
The Rapids may be five points behind Portland at the moment, but they do have a game in hand over the Timbers. I think Savarese’s side deserves the favorite tag for this clash, but I’m confident that Colorado can get something from this game.
